I am no longer using my AC68R as my main router / wireless AP. I have been trying to figure out how to get my AC68R to function only as a NAS server. I've tried placing it in bridge mode and attaching a USB hard drive, but am having a lot of difficulty getting anything else on the network to see the drive. I've tried it both as a Media Server and with SAMBA turned on. Neither seems to be accessible.

When I was using the AC68R as my main router, things worked pretty smoothly and I was able to easily map the drive to all of the devices on my network. Now that it isn't acting as my main router, it hasn't been as easy. Any suggestions?

*One thing I haven't tried is just turning off all the wireless and and connecting the AC68R to my LAN. If I were to do that, could I just put it in AP mode and turn off wireless off, essentially making it a switch and NAS server?

Any help is appreciated!

I am pretty sure it needs to be in router mode. :(

You can try doing a full reset on it, using it in router mode (temporarily) and setting up the USB attached drive (correction; you are not using it as a NAS in this mode).

Now, put it to AP mode and see if the USB drive 'sticks' and continues to be shareable. I have little hope it will, but you may get lucky.

There may be others that can assist you with cli commands to achieve what you want (hopefully).

The best 'solution' of course is to get a real NAS (attached via an Ethernet cable) instead.

Thanks, L&LD. I was afraid that it wouldn't work unless it was in router mode... I'd love to buy a NAS, but I really just use it to backup family photos to a 1TB portable drive. It would be hard to justify (to my wife) the additional expense since it would be fairly limited in its use. Thanks again!

You're welcome.

Re, NAS. 'Just backup family photos'? Ask your wife what she'd pay for even one of those if they were lost. :)
