Any plans to support GS-BE18000?

New Around Here
GS-BE18000 is one of the latest ASUS routers, and it also has somewhat half-baked AFC support out of the box. Any plans to support Merlin on it? I volunteer to beta test if needed (I have GS-BE18000)

I’ll do the honors before anyone else does:

Is there any progress on this matter?

Q: Will you add support for model XYZ?
A: The decision whether or not to support a new model depend on a long list of factors, which may evolve over time. Right now:

- It needs to be Broadcom-based
- It needs to be widely available (not just in two or three countries)
- It needs to have high-end hardware so I don't have to fight with lack of flash or RAM
- It needs to receive frequent enough GPLs so I won't have to regularly skip it due to the GPL being outdated
- I need to have one
- I need to have the time to try supporting it
- I need to have the motivation to try supporting it

Each new model requires its own dedicated support. That means every time I work on a new firmware release, I have to work on each separate model, and I need GPL releases from Asus for each individual model, and I need to merge each of them separately. So that means if I support 10 different routers, then I need to merge in the content of 10 different GPL releases, and these need to be close enough to one another to still be compatible. The more models I support, the harder this is to accomplish, therefore I am VERY conservative regarding adding any new model.

So don't ask if/when a new model will be supported. I cannot speculate about future model support, and until I have working support for a model, I cannot answer that question.

Looks like the STRIX GS-BE18000 just went on sale at Best Buy for $330… I’ve been watching this one for a while and this is the lowest price I’ve seen, plus can get another 15% off with trade-in/recycle.

I really would like my next router to be AFC capable… the BE19000AI is just too expensive to justify, and it’s too big for my setup. I gave up waiting on the other routers originally promised AFC (e.g., BE98 PRO).

As the only other AFC capable Asus router, this one is tempting… It’s just that I now have to decide if I can live without Merlin firmware and all of the Merlin add-ons that I currently make use of… tough decision.

weight your priorities then? if merlin firmware and the add-ons are important for u.. then u know what u wanted. to me, AFC is good to have but well not a MUST have

Yeah I held off on the GS-BE18000 for now. Interestingly enough, Best Buy has the ZenWifi BQ16 Pro 3-pack (AKA BE30000) on sale as the 'Deal of the Day' today for $850 total with the recycle discount... also a great price per-unit on another model that was 'promised' AFC support via firmware update (but still hasn't received it)... but again, no Merlin support.

I actually just started making use of the Merlin-specific features and amtm over the last couple of months, and have been pleasantly surprised how useful they can be... I'm sure I could live without them on stock Asus firmware, but given all the other stability issues I've been following over the past year on Wifi 7 Asus routers, I think I'll hold off a little longer and see what happens with firmware maturity and AFC and Merlin support offerings... just tough waiting when the family has a lot of newer Wifi 7 devices and no 6ghz options right now.
