ASUS RT-BE92U

After using the Merlin firmware. I don't want to go back to an Asus router that doesn't have it. Otherwise, I might have gone with the ROG Strix GS-BE18000 instead of the RT-BE96U.

OK. I have one BE96U setup as a router and one setup as an AP(I will try the mesh setup later this weekend)

Already it is a night and day difference from the BE92U routers I have. Right away, all my 2.4Ghz devices connected without any issues. It's been up for around two hours and everything has been solid, so far.

With every configuration I tried with the BE92U, this was never the case. So I'll see how things are in the morning. To see if anything drops off. Like my Nest Protects kept doing with the BE92U. And my Amana Heat Pump thermostat. As well as my Radon detectors. And Air purifiers. And alarm system. And my Ecowitt base stations for my air quality, humidity, and temperature sensors. And my outdoor outlets too.

And yes, I know. I should have listened to the people that said to stay away from the BE92U or be prepared to deal with issues. And you were certainly right.

I only wish I had purchased the BE96U at the time I purchased the BE92U routers. Because I would have been able to get 20% cash back, from TopCashBack. Since they were having a deal on Asus devices at the time. Now it is back to the normal 2% cashback from BestBuy.

EDIT: Another thing I am noticing is that my network is more responsive now with the BE96U. Then when I was using the BE92U.

Learn something new every day: radon detectors. I never knew there were such devices for domestic use. Thanks for that.

Put the past behind you and remember your negative experience will definitely help others; that’s worth a great deal.

Hope it all stays rock solid for you.

I ended up switching it to a mesh setup early this morning. And everything has been communicating like they should. Everything has been solid. No data missed from any device over the last 13 hours now. Which, with my BE92U units, was never the case.

It’s starting to feel like this router is a bit of a disaster in some areas (at least for me!) I am currently battling a couple of fairly odd issues.

Firstly, I am seeing occasional WAN dropouts. When this happens, the logs suggest a PHY-related issue and the only way to recover seems to be rebooting the router. My assumption at this point is that the ONT and the 10G WAN port are not playing nicely together.

Code:
udhcpc_wan[22680]: hnd_get_phy_status: Temporarily Router cannot get the PHY() status...

On top of that, I cannot fully utilise my ~2000Mbps symmetrical fibre connection on upload. Download speeds are perfect, but upload is consistently limited to around 1000Mbps. What makes this more confusing is that my Raspberry Pi, running several services, can hit around 1600Mbps upload, while my desktop PC can barely scrape past 1000Mbps. This is consistent regardless of how things are connected, whether via router LAN ports or a 2.5G switch. Swapping back to the ISP-provided router immediately restores full upload and download speeds, using the same cabling.

There are also ongoing frustrations with Dual WAN. I cannot get it working reliably, which prevents me from testing around the suspected 10G WAN issue by using LAN1 instead. My ISP requires VLAN101, so I have to use the IPTV section to apply the correct tagging, but this simply does not work properly. As a result, I am forced back onto the 10G WAN port, which again feels like the root of the problem.

These issues are present on both stock and Merlin firmware. At this point, it is starting to feel like this router is destined for eBay, assuming someone is brave enough to take it off my hands 🤡

Not limited to this ASUS model. If you need reliable Dual WAN - look for something else.
@Woolnut Reading the details here:

Have you tried swapping primary and secondary WAN designations, (if allowed to set the 2.5 GbE port as primary, then try the VLAN setting as I think it only applies to the designated primary WAN.) If this doesn't work I'm sure there are plenty here that may take it off your hands....

Thank you both. I may have been over complicating the troubleshooting, I don't need Dual WAN functionality, just I thought I may have needed it. I do have the option in the WAN section to change the WAN Type from "10G WAN/LAN-1" to "2.5G WAN/LAN-1"... I wonder if this could help some of the issues I've been experiencing. Will have a look at the documentation properly, it sounds like it is what I am looking for.

I'd ordered one of these a couple of days ago in preparation for FTTP being installed at my house in January, then the same evening I found this thread by accident. From what I've read I'm just going to leave it in the Amazon locker where it's been delivered for them to return it and get my money back, and look for something better in the meantime.

Unless anyone has anything better to say about this router?

Changing the primary WAN to 2.5G WAN/LAN-1 did not work at all. Checked the configuration, made sure the VLAN tagging was correct, cable was connected to the right port. As soon as I swap back to the 10G WAN/LAN-1 option, everything works, but with the same speed issue.

Contacted Amazon last night, purchased this router back in January and they are willing to take it back as a return, 90% sure I am going to take it and find a better router.

Personally I cannot recommend this router, it seems to be a hot mess. I am hopefully going to return mine shortly. I've ran it for just under a year and have had various issues throughout, but only recently has it started to annoy me enough to want to do something about it.

I've always had a great experience with Asus Routers, most recently the XT9 was pretty solid, but it didn't have the 2.5G LAN ports I needed which is one of the reasons why I opted for the RT-BE92U. Going to do some more research to find a replacement.

I think I'm going to stay away from anything WiFi 7 wise for now as well. I was looking at the RT-AX88 Pro, but the footprint is too big for me, the other one I was looking at was the AX86 Pro, but that doesn't seem available anywhere for any reasonable price, not that I can see anyway at the moment.

I am also need vertical format and BE92U doesn;t sound like the router, AX88U Pro is available, a bit overpriced and it's older, not sure how long it will be supported..

I bought the BE92U 2 months ago, Stock Firmware HW V3, 7 devices connected, no drops, no reboots, 1 factory reset after the last Firmware update. My ROG AX-6000 was having wan/lan issues, it would lose wired connection but wireless would work and only way to fix it was factory reset whenever it would happen. Bought the BE92U so far so good, butif something happens i will poat back.

Greetings All! New Here!

I picked up this router a few weeks ago and have been having issues with it. Can't have MLO on or the damn thing goes haywire. Maybe I'm not setting up MLO properly but there is so much confusion on how to set this up for me. After messing with the wifi settings, this is where I left off. Mind you, I'm no network professional. Currently on the latest merlin firmware 102.6 and running decently.

IoT 2.4 network
no MLO
Pretty bare bones just for my plugs and stuff.

Main Network running 5ghz and 6ghz channels only.
MLO is off.
Wifi 7 mode is on.
(Going to test with MLO on in a few days. Just want a baseline performance to compare off of.) MLO for now is not a priority as I only have 1 wifi 7 device which is my iPhone and it's kinda neutered anyway in wifi 7 capabilities. Doesn't do 320mhz width.

This has been running for like 3 days with no down time with this setup. MLO made things go haywire when I setup main network with all 3 bands.

I only upgraded because the price for this thing was right. And I'm hoping it will improve my latency over wifi a bit.

I also read about different hardware versions. So the one I have now is hardware version 3. I went to my local Microcenter and saw they had units with version 5.1 on them!.

So I decided to pick it up. I will be setting this one up with identical settings as above and return the hardware version 3. Hopefully with future firmware updates, this thing can become as rock steady stable as the Rt-AX86U its replacing. I will keep this unit around just in case either the BE92U becomes trash, or I can use it(assuming it plays nice) to a mesh network to extend my wifi out to my garage(which my previous ac68u was handling.

What do you guys think about these newer hardware versions? Wouldn't this mean that Asus is still confident that this router is still a unit they care about.

Wouldn't future firmware updates make this rock steady stable with time? Just like Asus' other routers in the past(like my ax86u)? Do you all have the same confidence as me or am I dreaming? I will return this if you all don't share the same confidence... LOL...

Your WiFi configuration is similar to mine.
2.4 IOT: 30+ devices
5&6 WiFi7 Main: 10 devices
No MLO

In my experience, MLO and AiMesh are not worth the headache. I would try to get your longer range devices in line of sight to the BE92. There are other options with multiple Asus devices if that doesn’t work out.

I have been reasonably stable once MLO and AiMesh are turned off.

My initial version was 3.0 and it bricked itself late summer. I then purchased another a few months later and it was 4.1. Nothing wrong with it except the 2nd to latest ASUSwrt would drop 5 GHz broadcast. Envious about the new 5.1. They must be having some sort of hardware issue as they keep revising it....

I wanted to chime in to share a positive experience, as usually only problems get reported.

I've had the BE92U (HW Ver. 1, manufactured in 2025) up and running for two full weeks now. Zero issues, zero disconnects. Tomorrow morning is my scheduled weekly reboot (I always schedule a reboot for Fridays at 4 AM for "digital hygiene"), but so far, it has been rock solid.

My setup is very similar to yours, and I think that's the key to stability right now:

  1. IoT Network: Dedicated to 2.4GHz (cameras, plugs, old echoes).
  2. Main Network: Smart Connect 5GHz + 6GHz.
  3. MLO: Globally OFF.
I tried messing with MLO (enabling it globally but keeping it off on the SSIDs) just to get the proper WiFi 7 icon on my OnePlus 15. While it fixed the icon, it made my TV completely lose sight of the 5GHz network. So, I disabled it again. MLO seems to be the main culprit for instability right now.

Regarding hardware versions: I wouldn't stress too much about v3 vs v5.1. As I said, I have v1 and it's performing flawlessly, covering my whole home better than my previous AX58U. It seems that as long as we keep MLO disabled until the firmware matures, the hardware itself is a beast regardless of the revision.

Enjoy the router, it's a keeper!
