ASUS RT-BE92U

After using the Merlin firmware. I don't want to go back to an Asus router that doesn't have it. Otherwise, I might have gone with the ROG Strix GS-BE18000 instead of the RT-BE96U.

OK. I have one BE96U setup as a router and one setup as an AP(I will try the mesh setup later this weekend)

Already it is a night and day difference from the BE92U routers I have. Right away, all my 2.4Ghz devices connected without any issues. It's been up for around two hours and everything has been solid, so far.

With every configuration I tried with the BE92U, this was never the case. So I'll see how things are in the morning. To see if anything drops off. Like my Nest Protects kept doing with the BE92U. And my Amana Heat Pump thermostat. As well as my Radon detectors. And Air purifiers. And alarm system. And my Ecowitt base stations for my air quality, humidity, and temperature sensors. And my outdoor outlets too.

And yes, I know. I should have listened to the people that said to stay away from the BE92U or be prepared to deal with issues. And you were certainly right.

I only wish I had purchased the BE96U at the time I purchased the BE92U routers. Because I would have been able to get 20% cash back, from TopCashBack. Since they were having a deal on Asus devices at the time. Now it is back to the normal 2% cashback from BestBuy.

EDIT: Another thing I am noticing is that my network is more responsive now with the BE96U. Then when I was using the BE92U.

I ended up switching it to a mesh setup early this morning. And everything has been communicating like they should. Everything has been solid. No data missed from any device over the last 13 hours now. Which, with my BE92U units, was never the case.

It’s starting to feel like this router is a bit of a disaster in some areas (at least for me!) I am currently battling a couple of fairly odd issues.

Firstly, I am seeing occasional WAN dropouts. When this happens, the logs suggest a PHY-related issue and the only way to recover seems to be rebooting the router. My assumption at this point is that the ONT and the 10G WAN port are not playing nicely together.

udhcpc_wan[22680]: hnd_get_phy_status: Temporarily Router cannot get the PHY() status...

On top of that, I cannot fully utilise my ~2000Mbps symmetrical fibre connection on upload. Download speeds are perfect, but upload is consistently limited to around 1000Mbps. What makes this more confusing is that my Raspberry Pi, running several services, can hit around 1600Mbps upload, while my desktop PC can barely scrape past 1000Mbps. This is consistent regardless of how things are connected, whether via router LAN ports or a 2.5G switch. Swapping back to the ISP-provided router immediately restores full upload and download speeds, using the same cabling.

There are also ongoing frustrations with Dual WAN. I cannot get it working reliably, which prevents me from testing around the suspected 10G WAN issue by using LAN1 instead. My ISP requires VLAN101, so I have to use the IPTV section to apply the correct tagging, but this simply does not work properly. As a result, I am forced back onto the 10G WAN port, which again feels like the root of the problem.

These issues are present on both stock and Merlin firmware. At this point, it is starting to feel like this router is destined for eBay, assuming someone is brave enough to take it off my hands

Not limited to this ASUS model. If you need reliable Dual WAN - look for something else.

Have you tried swapping primary and secondary WAN designations, (if allowed to set the 2.5 GbE port as primary, then try the VLAN setting as I think it only applies to the designated primary WAN.) If this doesn't work I'm sure there are plenty here that may take it off your hands....

From what I've read I'm just going to leave it in the Amazon locker where it's been delivered for them to return it and get my money back, and look for something better in the meantime.

I do have the option in the WAN section to change the WAN Type from "10G WAN/LAN-1" to "2.5G WAN/LAN-1"... I wonder if this could help some of the issues I've been experiencing. Will have a look at the documentation properly, it sounds like it is what I am looking for.

Changing the primary WAN to 2.5G WAN/LAN-1 did not work at all. Checked the configuration, made sure the VLAN tagging was correct, cable was connected to the right port. As soon as I swap back to the 10G WAN/LAN-1 option, everything works, but with the same speed issue.

Contacted Amazon last night, purchased this router back in January and they are willing to take it back as a return, 90% sure I am going to take it and find a better router.

Personally I cannot recommend this router, it seems to be a hot mess. I am hopefully going to return mine shortly. I've ran it for just under a year and have had various issues throughout, but only recently has it started to annoy me enough to want to do something about it.

I've always had a great experience with Asus Routers, most recently the XT9 was pretty solid, but it didn't have the 2.5G LAN ports I needed which is one of the reasons why I opted for the RT-BE92U. Going to do some more research to find a replacement.

I think I'm going to stay away from anything WiFi 7 wise for now as well. I was looking at the RT-AX88 Pro, but the footprint is too big for me, the other one I was looking at was the AX86 Pro, but that doesn't seem available anywhere for any reasonable price, not that I can see anyway at the moment.

I am also need vertical format and BE92U doesn;t sound like the router, AX88U Pro is available, a bit overpriced and it's older, not sure how long it will be supported..
