wireless. Hi!
I switched to cable & now get 400mbps down & 40up. Wireless about a 100mbps. My wife's laptop AC, & I believe the new sony TV is AC.

I've tried 2.4 & 5Ghz bands tried different control bandwidths, & control channels. Updated today's newest firmware. Wifi still about 100mbps down & 40 up.

Would any of these be worth a try?
1. Factory reset router
2. Stronger antenna
3. Merlin 384 firmware
a) after unzip. It's the .trx file to point to??

I thought 'ideal conditions' 80% of ethernet achievable. For me that would be 320mbps.

I think I know the answer to this one, just to confirm. 4k tv, need 15 - 25 mbps, so above that 100 or 400 mbps, adds no value? I thought instead of new router, string ethernet cable, but that would be overkill if it's already getting 100mbps.

Thanks

Rico, I can't tell what is limiting your bandwidth without actual on-site tests, but I can give you a data point for reference: my laptop, which does not have 802.11ac (only a/b/g/n), enjoys 200Mbps downloads (BTW that's not "m"). See attached clip.

Your #1 is worth a try, #2 only if you are at some distance from the router. #3 will at the very least provide you with a more stable machine.

I'll try factory reset, got a feeling, won't have internet, & end up calling support.
unzip. point to .trx file is that correct for merlin install, from router url admin page?

Thanks
Rico

Dan!
I'm using the latest firmware from Asus, also yesterday completed "Factory Reset"
speedtest.net gave 90 down & 45 up.

Today tried speedtest.net with Ipad, I got 300+ on it, then to the room with the lenovo yoga 3 pro 1370 model # 8oHE, Ipad 300+, retry, lenovo 50 download.

The lenovo has 'ac' uses Broadcom 802.11 ac network driver. I've looked for this driver & can't find, no problem finding , driver updaters.

On Lenovo ran 4 speedtest.net one after another: 154, 135, 69, 79

Surf to here and click "Automatic Driver Update."

But that doesn't sound like a driver problem--speed randomly changing fast to slow speaks nore of some local interference, or just a bit too far from the router.

I sat in the same chair in front of lenovo, with the Ipad & got the above 154,135,69,79 readings, ipad was consistent 300+

Hmmm! sat at the desk 30seconds ago 154 down
go into the room with router 70 down.

I also tried windows troubleshoot internet connection, windows says cannot auto detect proxy, my ehternet machine says the same.

tried reset winsock reboot
tried reset ipv4 reboot

not sure where to look next

Thanks
Rico

At this point I would take the Lenovo to another location (that is, another building with another router) and see what you get.

Are you trying to use a proxy? Can you turn it off?

Are getting the sporadic results on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz?

Did you try the link in my message #7 to check for a driver update?

Can you connect an Ethernet cable directly between the Lenovo and the router to test?

Hi Dan,
No I'm not knowingly trying to use a proxy:
upload_2018-3-30_19-4-32.png

2.4 & 5Ghz dl speed very erratic, upload speed is always consistent
post 7 I did it reboot & same situation, no help.

I will order from amazon a 'usb to ethernet' gigabyte, as the Yoga is way to thin, for a ethernet port.

Not sure if this has any bearing, I believe I'm using 'open DNS'

Thanks
Rick
I'll post back

Also I get this msg. here you should not be blocking SNBF ourms, I use KIS for this and allowed, browser is FF, does FF also block & turn it off for this sight?

Firefox has been very flaky recently on my wife's computer--it wouldn't even print right, and it slowed down every program she tried to use. I told her to turn it off and try Chrome and everything now works right.

Is KIS Kaspersky? Turn that off too if you want a true speed test. Extensions and add-ons that have to check sites and files before letting you see them have to slow things down by default.

So: just Chrome, no add-ons, and see if that helps. If it does you can add your favorite add-ons back in one at a time and measure the speed each time.

Hi Dan,
I'm puzzled!
Today I tested:

Lenovo laptop ac speed test 69Mbps
Sony Bravia TV XBR65X900E 53 Mbps
Apple Ipad 354 Mbps

Note the Ipad got 300+ in the room with laptop or the room with the TV

Also when signing on, lenovo & TV, I had two choices for signing on: Asus or Asus_5Ghz for both I chose 5Ghz. I've left the settings the way they were after Factory Reset. Wireless shows:

band 2.4 ghz
bandwith 20/40
control & extension channels both 'Auto

Hi Dan,

I tried this: 2.4Ghz band, where it has a check box for b/g, i chose "N-only

Channels 1, 6 & 11. Down in Mbps from speed test: 133, 112, 206.

I'll explore insider & 5GHz tomorrow

I still am confused sitting right next to lenovo, the iPad clocks in @300+, I even closed the lid on the laptop & out the Ipad on top of it, still the I pad gets lot better numbers

I still am confused
We are trying to reduce that confusion by stepping through possible causes. Don't change too much at once or we won't know where the bottleneck is.

Trying to re-establish wifi to my printer, I needed to type in the password, the password contains the symbol '$', the printer, tiny touch screen does not contain symbol '$'. So I connected lenovo & printer via usb cord. Re-install the driver & setup first time via USB, the printer does not recognize 5Ghz, which the lenovo is on. Click the wifi button (win 10 sys tray), I see 5G for lenovo, & Asus i connected to Asus, then printer, can now print wireless.

When I went to router.asus.c o m, click wireless Shows 2.4 Ghz which I changed to channel 11. Did those changes (on 2.4), not do anything to the 5Ghz connected lenovo? Shouldn't both computer & router be on the same band.

Epson said the latest version of my printer now includes the '$' on the tiny touch screen

Rico, I received an email notification that you replied but it is not showing up in the on-line forum:

Your router is "on" -- actually it is providing -- both bands. You can connect devices to either band, although 5GHz is overkill for the printer because it does not use information that fast.

Read some more on the Metageek site to get a deeper understanding of how Wi-Fi works.

Epson said the latest version of my printer now includes the '$' on the tiny touch screen
The next time you try that see if the displayed keyboard has a "Symbols" key, or sometimes it is on the "Numbers" keyboard.

So from router.asus. c o m, I can make changes to 2.4 & 5GHz, and those apply to those connected, like Lenovo, TV, Ipad 5Ghz, & since I activated (password connect Asus = 2.4) Epson printer is responding, to the settings from 2.4 from router.asus.c o m?

Previous post:

"I tried this: 2.4Ghz band, where it has a check box for b/g, i chose "N-only

These changes had nothing to do with channel selected, as the Lenovo was seeing/connected to 5Ghz??????????.

Yes it does have 'symbols' on the key labelled '1', or '1 symb' then 2, 3...9. Depressing 1 then depressing one again gives symbols '! depress again @, repeat #,^,&, (, ), *, ~, but they forgot the symbol $. Newer versions the error has been corrected. One in a million, my password contained the un-typeable '$' symbol. What I did not know was, a real install of the printer driver, offered wifi connection via usb (printer to computer), allowing typing in password containing '$' symbol from PC. That's how the password was related to the printer, that lacked the '$' symbol.

While epson & lenovo, were briefly connected via USB, Epson complained (could not see 5Ghz Lenovo connected), click wifi icon lower right of windows, found Asus_5Ghz, then connected to Asus which was 2.4Ghz. This satisfied Epson printer!

After getting 206 dl speed Lenovo, I was happy, mind you that, all I did was change channels trying 1,6,11 on the 2.4Ghz.

Hours later Lenovo reported 54Mbps down. Lenovo connected 5Ghz, so changing 2.4 does not apply?

Yes, the two radio bands in the router are separate. You can adjust the settings of each separately from the GUI interface by choosing "General > Wireless > Frequency" and clicking the arrow for a menu showing the two bands. If you change anything be sure to click "Apply" before leaving that page or your changes will not be entered.

Correct. The 5GHz channels are 36 and above.

What you did was connect the laptop to the 2.4GHz band of the router. It had no effect on the printer, which must have finally found that signal itself.

Please re-read your sentences before posting. The printer did not complain "could not see 5GHz Lenovo connected" because the printer has no knowledge of the laptop's network settings. It is tough to troubleshoot without accurate and concise reports.

No, the laptop was no longer connected to the 5GHz band--you changed it to 2.4GHz via the Wi-Fi icon in the lower left of the Windows Desktop.

I am again going to urge you to review those five sections to which I linked in Message #13 so you have a deeper understanding of how Wi-Fi is structured. Also, please only change one thing at a time because one change might fix something while a second change breaks it again.

Hi Dan

The gigabyte ethernet adapter, installed on lenovo, I got 325 down.

What I should have said is Epson does not support 5Ghz. While Lenovo was 5Ghz the printer said not supported, then click on network's activated Asus typed in password, & printer can now print via wifi.
So by me activating Asus (2.4) from lenovo, the lenovo is now using 2.4 Ghz band? Then it like a toggle Asus, Asus_5g activating Asus, Asus-5g no longer connected, & I'm using Asus 2.4.

Can I put Lenovo to 5Ghz, & not break the printers connection to wifi????????
