Would love it if I could use serviio on my asus. I can from my computer through networking, but I would love the router to do all the work. really no difference between what the router already has, but serviio doesn't have the tendency to crash when scanning

I have been using OpenDNS to filter categories I do not want my kids to have access to and it works well. The down side is I have kids of various ages and this filtering is for my entire LAN. It would be nice to be able to adjust OpenDNS filtering by IP so my teenagers could have fewer restrictions than the little guy. So including that would be awesome!

Merlin could help you out with this one,
Use opendns for the older kids and customize it for them
Use Norton connect safe ( C) for youngest
Use Norton Connect safe ( B ) for others
and Use Norton connect sage ( a ) for adults

You will have IP's setting for 4 different DNS's I read somewhere that you can do it IP filtering;

I setup each machine via DNS setting in the network control panel.

Does this release include the newer N66U driver that was removed from prior builds?

It's still based on the old 270 driver.

Might be worth seeing if it's a specific photo causing the issues. Try scanning only half of the photos at a time, until you can isolate it to a specific photo (or album).

Otherwise, it could also be a bug introduced in the new thumbnail code that Asus has added, not necessarily 1.1.0 itself.

Good idea. From what I recall in the logs, it would log the first .jpg it failed on. I can move folders out of the index path and see if it is a photo or resource issue.

Now, I had used Entware to install the older 1.0.2? version of minidlna (opkg install minidlna). Do you think just an opkg remove will revert back to the newer beta version of minidlna? What launches minidlna during startup?

Rt-ac66u

Merlin, thanks for your great work. The firmware is awesome. Ive been following your work for quite some time, thanks again!!

I have a wierd issue (not realy an issue) to share with you. I am currently using my RT-AC66U.

My ISP is VIVO, a fiber service from Brazil. Actually very good. Download rate of 200mb and upload 80mb

Vivo requires me to configure a VLAN (Vlan10) + pppoe in order to get things working. I am skeeping the Vlan20 required for the TV service...

The problem is that i cannot reach the full speed using some firmwares, and others, I can, for example?

xx372.31 > 120mb|80
xx372.30_2 > 200mb|80 :D
xx374.32 > 130mb|80
xx374.33 beta 1 > 130|80

Just to let you know that with the newst tomato usb for the AC66 I can reach 200mb|80. No big deal, just more information for my question.

Those speeds of course can vary, but the beta is not significant.

I have also had this issue with RT-N66U and RT-N16. There is any explanation for it?

Thanks in advance!

best,

The built-in minidlna is controlled by the Media Server option under USB -> Servers. You can disable or enable the built-in server there.

Go to the Tools -> Sysinfo page, and make sure it shows HW acceleration as being enabled. If not, it will tell you which feature is causing HW acceleration to be disabled.

After 3 days (20:01:04 up 3 days, 20:34, load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00) I'm getting this error message:

osl_ctfpool_add: skb alloc of len 2000 failed

Thanks for the feedback, so far you're the first user that tells me he is actually using it. Any particular problem with it so far? I was worried that its performance might not be optimal for anyone outside of Russia. Having it limited to only the children's computer might not make it a major issue at least.

If it's working well, I might just promote it to the main build.

Sorry for the late reply, I was in another world.

No major issues, I had it on for my macaddress too for a while but I found it would occasionally block me from a few common sites like target.com probably temporarily as they gather more data.

Speed wise it didn't seem much of a problem after all we're only talking about the dns lookup, which is probably a small fraction of the overall time it takes to get a page and even then it's cached for a while after the first try.

For the kids this sort of time cost is nothing compared to them coming across say, a beheading/shooting/fighting/swearing video hosted elsewhere because some idiot posted it in a lego forum and the mods hadn't removed it yet or some dodgy porn stuff both of whose hosts may have been filtered by Yandex... we monitor our kids habits pretty closely and there's multiple layers of filtering on some devices, yandex on the router and time slots too but it only takes one incident to cause pretty serious problems depending on the content accessed and the age of the young person. Plus many devices don't offer much in the form of control.

The beauty of the router solution is that it takes care of tablets and smart devices like touchs. If anyone has iOS devices you'll realize very quickly that Apple doesn't care much for useful parental tools and builds laughable controls into their devices (unlike Amazon or MS which at least have some parental controls - MS Family Safety is excellent by the way as a line of defense).

Also worth noting you can have Yandex on but turn off the default filtering (network wide) then apply filtering on a per device basis. This should make very little difference to the unfiltered machines.

Big thumbs up from me...

Regards

Steph

iOS parental controls are more oriented around restricting things obtained through the App Store or iTunes Store (apps, music, movies, etc). Once you put a web browser on a mobile device it is pretty difficult to restrict that device's usage of the net (outside of things that take place on the router).

OS X has similar stuff

The Windows Family Safety stuff is pretty spiffy though if your computing is done through Windows PCs.

It is a little surprising that Apple doesn't have a solution more in line with the Windows one. Especially since a lot of Apple people own Apple networking equipment, I would think all the ingredients are in place.

Sounds like you are running out of memory. Are you using the Media Server or Download Manager?

Check memory usage from processes, free memory, and /tmp usage:

Code:
ps w
free -m
df -h

On my mac at home, my 5 year old has an account (she has to log in) and i just turn on all parental controls there. Her time is limited each day, and the websites she can visit is limited.

Keeping your kids safe with macs is easy.

Parental controls are fixed in this beta, good job Merlin;)
I wonder if its fixed in the 3.0.0.4.374.726 release ? I am going to put that version on and see. thanks for you great work. I will keep an eye out for any updates that pertain to any parental controls.

Doubt it. Asus were waiting on more feedback from users before taking a look at the Parental Control code I submitted them. So far you're the only one who actually confirmed that his Parental Control issues were fixed.

To be honest, for something that some users were quite vocal about a few weeks ago, the lack of feedback with this potential fix is quite disappointing.

I noticed that also, I thought more would have pertisapaded.
I also noticed that when you have it shut off say 10:00 if you are in a game it doesn't shut off the open connection. That has always been the case with all Asus firmwares,
Other brands cut the connections on time specified.

I was using RT-N66U_3.0.0.4_372.32_beta3 previously, which is quite good and stable. I just upgraded to this, and even though the signal strength stayed at 3 bars, the wireless speed is quite bad. Previously I could stream youtube 1080p without issues, but now there are buffering problems even with 140p. Same with desktop to laptop media streaming. I did not reset router to defaults since it was recent.

There has been no change in the wireless driver for the RT-N66U between 32_beta3 and 33_beta1.

No way the upgrade would have caused the issue I am seeing? Perhaps it somewhere on my end then. I am also seeing disconnections even with 3 bars (i.e. connected but no internet so basically DCed). Happened to another one of our laptop as well. Desktop (wired) is fine.

Maybe I will try to reset the router later.

I thought it could be that the ESTABLISHED,RELATED rule for SPI was before the PControl rules, but I just checked and that's not the case.

The only thing I could see is that the PControl rule that drops traffic outside of the allowed period only drops traffic coming from LAN to Internet. I thought it would still prevent packet ACKs from being sent ( causing the connection to eventually time out), but apparently not.

It might be interesting to try modifying that rule to drop any traffic, not just from br0 to any, and see if it helps.
