I am sure you aren't trying to upload the zipped file. If you have any USB drives connected remove them and try again. What router are you using?

Nope I'm uploading the RT-N66U_3.0.0.4_374.42_0.trx file and have no USB drivers whatsoever connected. (never had btw). Till now all uploads went without any problems.

Remember: Higher electrical gain means higher distortion of the signal. That is a rule of thumb, and of course I did not study the amplifying circuits.
Not really at all. It can happen, but it can happen at either the transmitter or receiver depending on many factors. If it were a rule, there would not be high-powered radio amplifiers used all over the World. It is generally best practice to use the minimal power required for reliable communication.

Also 'Electrical gain' is not a term I have come across. What do you mean by it?

After trying to update from 38_2 to 42 I got the error "Update unsuccessful" directly after "choose file" and upload. I tried it with Safari and Chrome (also downloaded the image with both browsers).

Also checked the MD5 hash and that is correct.

Should I update with a lower version 1st?

Thanks!
If you haven't tried rebooting your router yet it might be worth a try. Also, if you weren't using the EM version 38.2 you will have to do a factory reset.

When I look at the Firmware version it only shows: Firmware:3.0.0.4.374.38_2 (at the home screen). I will reboot my router first and then I will try later.

P.S. I did a factory reset after installing this current version (38_2)

Right. Us, Canadian, UK, Irish or whatever dialect of English is not what I grew up with. But if you REALY did not understand what I was trying to say, I wasted my time. Won’t happen again. Enjoy…

it seems some reading is in order for you ;)

Electrical (amplifier) gains, as he obviously was speaking about amps.

try this one: http://www.allaboutcircuits.com/vol_3/chpt_1/4.htm

Electrical gain does not mean anything. Power gain does. Exactitude goes with my day job and carries over to other things.

No reading required here. People keep on repeating the same thing about increased power resulting in degraded performance as if it were some rule - it just isn't.

DrT G4DWV/4X1LT - the former since 1975.

You will have to do a factory reset with the .42 as well. All builds for the N66 are now by default the EM build. When you go from an non EM build to an EM build a reset is necessary.

Thanks for the update Merlin!

The OverClock button doesn't work :( when i push it the router restarts and then i cant connect to the internet anymore, so i need to turn it off again ;(

Successfully updated from .41 to .42. No issues so far. Thank you Merlin!

Hi Merlin I've been trying .42 version since yesterday and it happened twice (i rebooted the router 3 times for other reason) some devices weren't able to register to guest wifi. All is ok with normal wifi. I've only 2.4 GHz enabled and the guest is set as following:

-no security
-mac address restriction
-no intranet

The problem can be fixed by disabling and then re-enabling the guest wifi. Could anyone check if the problem can be replicated? Later I'll post the log

This is the log about the device trying to register to GUEST wifi and then, after disabled and then renabled it, finally managing to do this (the mac address involved is a0:0b:ba:b6:d4:e6):

Heat

Firstly I want to say thank you Merlin for all of the tweaks that you have done with these routers firmware. I like stability and so far the firmware has not gone down once.

My primary question has to do with my RT-AC68R temperature being very hot. I know AC routers are new and new stuff is generally less efficient, but I am getting 90- 102C from CPU in my attic. Meanwhile the radios are in the 59 - 61 C range. I would never let my computer get this hot. Should I be very concerned?

...running version .39 since I first received and set-up my AC68U...uptime now 85+days.

Should I upgrade to .42?

If so, will my settings/config persist or is there a way to save/export and restore/import?

Thanks for the update Merlin!

The OverClock button doesn't work :( when i push it the router restarts and then i cant connect to the internet anymore, so i need to turn it off again ;(

The Turbo button does not work with newer versions of the bootloader.

Close to 100C is a bit too high to be comfortable. I recommend installing some kind of cooling to help bring it closer to 85-90C. A laptop cooling pad might get the job done, for example.

See the list of changes between 374.39 and 374.42, and decide for your self. The security fixes alone should be a good reason to upgrade.

If so, will my settings/config persist or is there a way to save/export and restore/import?

A factor default reset shouldn't be necessary for this model, but be prepared to do one if you notice wifi-related stability issues.

if i want to jump from .5517 to 374.42,do i need factory reset or clear nvram?

.42 look awesome i want to give it a try

thanx

RT-N66u

Yes, due to the different wireless driver I use for the RT-N66U.

I observed the same oddity with .42 as I did with .41; and that is when I perform a Site Survey (active), within 30 seconds 5GHz band signal strength diminishes from -49dBm at my test computer (ASUS PCE-AC68 wireless card) to -59dBm measured by inSSIDer. My first visual indication is the Windows Network Connection Status Icon in the Notification Area goes from a constant full 5 bars to a constant 4 bars. When I look at the RT-AC68U Wireless Log, RSSI is the same -58dBm, but RX/TX has gone from 1053/1053 to 1053/702. A Reboot from the GUI gets the 5GHz signal strength back to normal. 2.4GHz doesn’t seem to be affected.

It appears that the RT-AC68U’s transmit power on the 5GHz band is being changed when a Site Survey is performed, perhaps affecting beamforming?

For me, this is 100% repeatable.

Hi Merlin,

I just updated from 374.41 to 374.42 on my N66U and added a Media Server Directory by clicking the "Apply" button, after that my mediaserver screen appeared in this manner (the top half suddenly disappeared). I tried using Firefox, IE & Safari, all producing the same result. How do I get the full screen back? Thanks.

Does anybody know if I reflash 374.42, will I get back full screen for the mediaserver, please? Thanks!
