New Around Here
Hi all,
I'm new here and having some problems with my business network.
We're experiencing these issues we need help resolving.
1) browsing mapped drives on the NAS slows the windows Explorer process
2) enabling Jumbo frames increases the delay even more
3) Opening a mapped drive on the NAS in Explorer can take a few seconds

We are going to replace 1 of the 10/100 PCs' motherboard to a motherboard with a gigabit NIC - Since we want a Gigabit network with 4K Jumbo Frames - we move around a lot of photo images every day between PCs and the NAS.

OUR ENVIRONMENT:
We have 4 Windows XP PCs (2 with 10/100 nics, 2 with gigabit nics), Netgear GS108 Gigabit switch, network IP laser printer (100mbps) and a synology DS409+ NAS (gigabit) all using static IP addresses in 192.168.1.xxx/ 255.255.255.0. NO DOMAIN CONTROLLER, all PCs in the same Workgroup.
All PCs map drives to 2 shares on the NAS, and we all copy/read to and from just those shares. No PCs have shared folders, just 1 PC has a shared printer.

1 of the 10/100 PCs and 1 of the Gigbit PCs have an additional 10/100 nic connected to a DSL/Router for internet access (using DHCP from the router 172.xx.xx.xx). None of the other devices have internet access (we want it that way) THESE ARE THE 2 COMPUTERS THAT ARE HAVING THE SLOW NETWORK BROWSING ISSUES.

All cabling is Cat 5 or Cat 5E with fairly short runs (5 feet to 30 feet), longer runs have the Cat 5E.

THE PROBLEMS:
When browsing a mapped drive (share) on the NAS you can traverse the directory tree fairly quickly, but when you go up a level, and eventually get to the root directory, the PC hangs for about 4-8 seconds.
With Jumbo Frames, file copy performance is AMAZING, but when browing the mapped network drive, the pause/delay is even greater.

WHAT could be causing this ?? And
Do we need a DNS server or WINS server or a Gateway ?
What do we have to configure to get this to work properly ?

ANY Help would be greatly appreciated as this is really impacting our business.
Thanks very much!

also, if I posted in the wrong forum, please feel free to move it to the correct one !
