GT-BE98 Pro 3006.102.5 DNSDirector

Seems updating from 3006.102.4 to 3006.102.5 with dns director enabled and pointed to my two pihole servers causes the entire router to stop responding entirely. No pings no ssh. Turning off or unplugging the piholes get the router back responding and then disabling the dns directory and putting everything back except for the dns director, everything goes back to working correctly.

Is there something I don't have configured right or something else?

I do see there is some changelogs to dns director so I am not sure if something is supposed to be done differently.

Post how you have setup the router for Pi-Hole including your DNS Director settings if any.

No issue on a RT-AX86U when updating from 3006.102.4 to 3006.102.5 while running two Pi-Holes (on Raspberry Pi's).

Just a standard basic setup in the pihole. Never seemed to have an issue before. Running Merlin for about 15 years and a similar setup the whole time. DNSDirector is a newer feature of course.

Apologies. Though I hit reply on the message but must not have. Anyways just turning on the DNSDirector will literally kill the router, no GUI, ssh, or even pings. Before it dies, the pings get upwards of 3000ms.

Is 192.168.1.2 the Pi-Hole? You are missing a “No Redirection” rule for Pi-Hole device (assuming it isn’t PS5-PRO). DNS Director is only redirecting traffic to 192.168.1.1 (User defined 1). User defined 2 is not used at all.

What are the WAN DNS settings?

I assumed with it on, it forces for everyone unless specified right? 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.2 are PiHoles. Do both need to be in there with no redirection?

I have not applied the settings, but I assume you mean like this?

The way I had tested it before was set it basically like this, then set a pc to use 8.8.8.8, check in the logs of the router and you see it trying to talk to 192.168.1.1 instead. I might be being a little dense on what this is supposed to do.

What is IP address 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.2?

Yes, otherwise the Pi-Hole queries sent to Quad9 and Cloudflare will get redirected back to Pi-Hole 1 and cause a loop.
This might be my issue. I have not tested yet but will. I thought it automatically added it, but since last firmware was not correct in the IP tables i never had any issues.

Pihole 1 and 2 - both are identical. just in case one fails. 1.1 is the main.
Out of curiosity, how are the Pi's connected to the router? Using Ethernet or WiFi?

Anyway attached are examples of my configuration with two Raspberry Pi's running Pi-Hole and Unbound connected to a RT-AX86U Pro running Merlin 3006.102.5 firmware. In my example the router is IP address 192.168.2.1, the Pi-Holes are 192.168.2.124 (Ethernet) and 192.168.2.58 (WiFi) respectively. LAN DHCP Server DNS set to both Pi's. Both Pi's in the DNS Director's Client List set to No Redirection. Works good, no issues.

Edit to add NOTE: I have the second Pi-Hole in DNS Director's User Defined DNS #2 for testing purposes due to sometimes configuring one of the Guest Network Pro Profiles to use it exclusively. Others will likely only need to put their main Pi-Hole into User Defined DNS #1 unless their use case calls for using additional User Defined DNS entries. Updated the DNS Director attached image as well.

A correct setup, but don’t let anyone be misled by the second yellow arrow that populating User Defined DNS 2 does anything useful in this scenario.
What will eventually use your Pi-hole on x.58 IP?
Have the second Pi-Hole in User DNS #2 because sometimes I test out one of my Guest Network Pro Profiles on it.

With my example settings both Pi's receive DNS queries and correctly resolve the names when checking the Pi-Hole's Query log. As always YMMV on how to configure for one's use case.

PS: Updated my post above to clarify why I have the second Pi-Hole in User Defined DNS #2.

As I see it if the Pi-hole on x.124 IP is out - no Internet.

Everything that can be wired is wired. But yes both are wired. 1.1 is local wired, 1.2 is through a switch.

The two Pi-holes you have are both wired and local, but there is no fail-safe in this setup. The one used by your clients is User defined 1. The other one is just connected to the network and does nothing. What is your use case for two Pi-holes?
