im starting to worry, with all the close source stuff deos thst mean that there will be a day where it will be completely closed source?

I may be wrong, but I don’t think it will go totally closed source. It appears to be trending in a direction that’s making it more difficult for Merlin to work with the firmware. That’s a real bummer for sure.

Now on 384.3 alpha 2. Have not done extensive testing, just usual usage same as previous version. So far so good.
Just a small note that the cpu seems to work a bit harder and temp increase by 2 degree. Anyone have notice this?

I upgrade to 384.3 alpha 2. Openvpn connected. But no traffic to the my private lan or to the wan. Do I need to set iptables rule manually?

So I was finally able to get my hands on an AC86U and track down the weird issues introduced with this new device and my script.

One of the major ones seems to be non ascii characters randomly being inserted to files I do various modifications on with grep/sed/echo. The real problem is the null character when being processed by IPSet crashes the router with the following message.

Code:
Feb 14 10:00:17 kernel: _ Reboot message ... _______________________________________________________

Now with that being said, I can't reproduce this every time, it happens maybe %60 of the time a new "list" is generated by Skynets banmalware function. This issue is not apparent on any other devices (random characters being inserted that is, I haven't tested yet if IPSet crashes on other devices when trying to list/restore entries with this character in it).

In the example here, 934 "null" characters were added to the end of the file for no apparent reason, sometimes the random characters replace other text too so the location/point of input isn't consistent.

So the short version is, do you have any idea what would be causing an issue of this nature on only this device, and secondly can any mitigation be put in place so at-least IPSet doesn't hard reboot the router when dealing with such characters in both the restore/save commands.

IPSet v6.35 is also out, I don't see any changes directly related to an issue of this nature but potentially it has be addressed.

I will try my best to track it down further, but the hard reboots make it quite a slow process.

I have an OpenVPN server working on a 86U without issues, connects and speed is alright, I have to use it over TCP as all UDP port are blocked here at work, so it's slower than it could be.

I decided to test PPTP to see if I could get better speeds.

While trying to connect from a Win 10 client, using it's built in option, I keep getting timed out.

This is the line in the router log.

Jan 23 13:25:32 pptpd[11512]: MGR: dropped slow initial connection

Any ideas?

Hi Merlin

I have been fighting and arguing with the Linksys WRT routers for the last 3 years. WRT1900ACv1, V2, 3200ACM.

I went out and bought an AC86U last week and flashed your latest beta, and it is the best, most efficient internet/network, I have had in 3 years.

Thank you for your hard work on this great router.

Linksys WRT routers --> being recycled for parts.

I noticed that while running the asus 384.10007 it would offer me both an upgrade and check button when I was already running that firmware. I did a factory reset and then reinstalled it yet this behavior persisted. Only after installing the merlin 384.3_a1 and then going back to the stock firmware did that condition clear up for me. I obviously have the most retarded 88u on the planet.:p

TBH, my 68u had the same issue, just it's never solved XD It will shows I can upgrade the firmware(When I click it, it actually went and download the same fw and installed it *facepalm*). I went back n forth twice, guess my 68u is more retarded than yours! And there's 2 options to factory reset in stock fw, lol restore/initiate, both did the same thing...

@Merlin. Something in the AiProtection causes my RT-AC68U to go into a CPU meltdown. If there’s moderate load such as two IPTV streams the CPU use rockets and eventually the router grinds to a halt throttling all bandwidth. With AiProtection switched off it is fine.

Is this code something you have access to or is this closed source? The official ASUS release is exactly the same as was 382.

Any ideas please?

Thanks,

HB

Check if you have any logs in both 2way ips and mal site blocked, clear them by clicking the trashcan icon.

@RMerlin In 382.2_beta3 / 384.3_alpha I spotted a few pages with HTML errors. I have listed each fragment with the correction below it:

Advanced_TOR_Content.asp:

Thanks for the suggestion. I cleared all logs but it has made no difference unfortunately.

Same action on the RT-AC66U_B1. I reported it to Asus via feedback and they actually replied via email acknowledging the problem and that they are working on a fix!

I hope they fix all of them for the customers sake.

Could be a mistake on Asus's update servers. I run my own update server (for obvious reasons).

Everything tied to Trend Micro is closed source.

OK thanks; I feared that this would be the case.

I don’t really want to switch it off as I have two young children and their friends using the WiFi and like the first line of defence that it offers. In your opinion would it be better to contact Trend Micro directly on this?

Many thanks,

HB
