They haven't announced any ETA.

Nothing for the US or anywhere else as well except for the ASUS statement of H1, 2018. Presumably that means the first half of 2018.

And Asus has as an habit of missing those target dates (the RT-N66U was nearly a year late as I recall), so I wouldn't expect anything until they are actually close to the official release.

The AC86U hit the FCC in 04/2017 and was on the market by 08/2017, so I was figuring that the AX88U wouldn't take too much longer because it initially hit the FCC back some time around 09/2017. Interestingly, all the info on the AX88U at the FCC has been removed and replaced with a new set of data dated 02/2018. So maybe we can expect the AX88U in about 3-4 months from now which still fits in the H1-2018 window.

Not necessarily. The GT-AC5300 spent well over 6 months on the FCC before reaching market.

A permissive Class II change was granted for the RT-AX88U on April 30. One step closer to it going up for sale.

The next ROG AX router seems likely to use a Qualcomm quad-core. https://wikidevi.com/wiki/ASUS_GT-AX6000
The ROG Rapture GT-AX6000 Dual-band Gaming Router just hit the FCC with all documents available. Interestingly, the documents also mention a GT-AC5400 which has the same hardware but lacks a 10G copper interface (and apparently has 802.11ax disabled).

It looks like the AX6000 speed comes from 8x8:8 5GHz 802.11ax 80MHz @ 4800 Mbps and 4x4:4 2.4GHz 802.11ax 40MHz @ 1150 Mbps

The AC5400 likely comes from something like this...
8x8:8 5GHz 802.11ac MCS-11 (80MHz, 800 ns GI, 1024-QAM) @ 4800 Mbps
4x4:4 2.4GHz 802.11n MCS-31 (40MHz, 400 ns GI, 64-QAM) @ 600 Mbps

I'll let the pictures speak for themselves.

I saw an Aura controller in those photos, that means controllable LED lighting.
