When this happens next, could you both look at the System Log and whether you see multiple entries like this:

I've been having to reboot every couple of days with this firmware to regain DNS, and I'm not exactly sure why or how I'm reaching the limit. I might have to go back to an older version since this makes it terribly inconvenient.

I think I've figured this out. I disabled the DLNA server setting and also Force as Master Browser (under USB advanced setting). I haven't had a DNS crash in over 7 days.

I would reference the thread over at their forums, but it's only for members. The lowdown:

Another user found out that when disabling static DHCP assignments on the Merlin firmware, the hanging issue disappears. No clue why that would cause an issue with Plex, but apparently it does. Of the two people reporting this issue, we are both using the N66U and Merlin's firmware. Could be a broader Asus deal, but its a very odd occurrence. Merlin, given your expertise, do you think this could be related to some other issue that you may be aware of with the firmware?

Can't see how having a static IP returned by the router would make any difference versus a semi-random one, sorry. From the client's point of view, both are dynamic - it's just that a reservation will ensure you always get the same one.

anyone ? can this be caused by transmission? i had 2 torrents downloading at that time.
eventualy this errors added up and i could not acces the internet nor the router and i had to reboot it from the button....
i would post the entire log but is bigger than im allow to uplod

I've noticed that the memory status of my router is changing over time, and wonder if its significant:

After an initial boot I have

Total: 234.25 MB
Free: 101.76 MB
Buffers: 82.98 MB

But after 7 days my buffers have dropped significantly

Total: 234.25 MB
Free: 153.58 MB
Buffers: 2.58 MB

In the past I've run out of buffers and had log errors, but I then disabled the PPTP VPN Server as I suspected this was partly the cause, and the reduction in buffer memory has slowed down.

In the past my router has eventually slowed down and needed a reboot - does the reducing buffer space indicate a problem?

But after 7 days my buffers have dropped significantly

I don't know if this can be applied to your problem, but I run transmission from entware and everything went smooth until I downloaded a large file of approximately 6 GB. Transmission did download that file correctly, but, after a half an hour or so mysteriously the file become corrupted. At first I addressed the problem to a faulty usb disk which, when examined, did show some bad sectors, but, even after the substitution, the problem persisted.
I didn't thik I could have memory problems, as I never had less than 64 Mb of free memory. Nevertheless I decided to add 512k of swap memory.... and the problem disappeared.
Now, if I check my free memory I always see the amount free memory I used to have with transmission running, but I often see a couple MB in use in swap memory (that file is still seeding). So I believe that, despite the fact that when you check memory you see that a lot is free, particular conditions, difficult to catch with the free command, may cause you run out of memory for some instants, sufficient to cause strange problems.

I am actually the other user having the issue. I think it has to do with the hostname. I found this fix out because my Macs were waking up announcing themselves and were not going back to sleep. The last thing in the log was that it was broadcasting its hostname via mDNSResponder. When I removed the DHCP reservation for these Macs, they are sleeping and waking as expected. I suspect, and I am not an expert on such things, that there is something happening with a hostname mismatch OR the way that 10.8.x needs to announce itself. I can help you out with whatever troubleshooting you need.

Also, this might be an Asus firmware issue and not related to your branch of the firmware. It just so happens that Kaiguy and I are both running the same router with the your firmware. I may flash Tomato this weekend to see if the problem exists there.

The internal web server isn't a full web server in the sense you might be thinking (it's not Apache or lighttpd). It's a custom daemon that happens to process HTTP requests, with a custom backend.

I'm not sure if logging webui logins can easily be done (due to the way Asus handles authentication), I can have a look.

For firewall logging there is an option on the Firewall page to enable packet logging. Logging everything isn't really practical however, since everything is logged in clear text in the RAM disk, so you run the risk of quickly filling it up.

OpenVPN needs logging if you ask me. I think that package came from elsewhere? Is that code 2+ yrs old like I see when I google this ("written by Keith Moyer for Tomato"). Any hope of new features around it?

I did just find the connection initialization and success. I overlooked them previously. Maybe thats good enough.

You can also manually increase the amount of logging related to OpenVPN, for troubleshooting.

nvram set vpn_debug=0

Value can be between 0 and 3, and will enable debugging logging for the firmware part of OpeNVPN. 0 is the default.

Code:
nvram set vpn_loglevel=3

Sets the level of verbosity of OpenVPN logging, value is between 0 and 15. 3 is the default.

I currently have no plans to make any change to the OpenVPN code itself. If you need to use any other feature of OpenVPN not exposed by the webui, you can manually add the required settings in the custom setting section.

Anyways, I flashed final versions in this thread from ASUS stock , and since I didnt even bother trying asus firmware out (stock) My router is loosing connection with ISP at this point 4 times this weekend.

I do not normally have ISP issues with Charter this frequently.

I really like what you have done with the Asus frmware, but from a familiarity standpoint have been using DD-WRT for over 6-7 years I would guess ever since that turn your 60 router into a 600 headline spead like wildfire.

Anything you can recommend. I want to get this router stabilized to program and send to my dad here at in the next few days.

Anything that I can check on the ISP disconnects from the router logs?
I am on 3.0.0.4.270.24. Right now it appears that barryware ftp address is down so i cant even try out a dd-wrt build from fractal for comparision.

I was really hoping I could adapt to ASUS WRT-Merlin, but the WAN disconnects are troubling.

The only thing that seems to restore internet connection is to click troubleshooter, then on off in globe icon (http://192.168.1.1/device-map/internet.asp) , and sometimes a reboot, it just gets stuck on renewing...unless I do that.

Wow, $120 each is a really good price for the rt-n66u...were these refurbished units? The current price at Office Depot is $171, that would be a really exceptional sale price.

I am on 3.0.0.4.270.24. Right now it appears that barryware ftp address is down so i cant even try out a dd-wrt build from fractal for comparision.

I was really hoping I could adapt to ASUS WRT-Merlin, but the WAN disconnects are troubling.

The only thing that seems to restore internet connection is to click troubleshooter, then on off in globe icon (http://192.168.1.1/device-map/internet.asp) , and sometimes a reboot, it just gets stuck on renewing...unless I do that.

Make sure the Ethernet cable between the modem and the router is Cat5e or Cat6, since the router has a gigabit port. Otherwise the connection between the router and the modem will be unstable.

Also, try leaving the modem turned off for 5-10 minutes, to fully reset the connection with the ISP, just to be safe.

Finally, make sure you update to 3.0.0.4.270.25b. That version has a fix specific to Charter, for the case where the router might get you blacklisted by Charter's DHCP servers if you send too many DHCP requests in a short period of time (this is mostly the case after powering up the modem, or after a power failure).
