What's the best router for a gamer that needs a solid QoS feature to prevent lag by random downloaders.

I've had experience with the DLink DGL 4300, and DIR 655. I've tweaked the QoS and workstations to get a nice balance of download/upload and gaming, but I'd like a router that has a robust QoS so I don't have to tweak the workstations. Netflix does cause spikes in game latency, and downloading (unless controlled) causes serious gaming lag).

Thanks.

Ubicom based routers (the D-Links you mentioned) are about the best you can get for automatic QoS. Everything else requires manual setup.

Main disadvantage is that Ubicom's technology handles upstream traffic. It can control downstream TCP/IP bandwidth somewhat, by delaying ACKs.

One way to go would be to get a router that can put a bandwidth cap on your downloaders. See Taming Your Network's Bandwidth Hogs - Part 1

Thanks for the article.
The section on turning a pc into a traffic shaper is very cool.

I am looking for the best solution within a router, while not spending thousands of dollars.

It looks like a few routers (under $500) offer a bandwidth cap assigned per IP?

Are there any off the shelf options recommended?

thanks
