Bug free Open-wrt router suggestions.

New Around Here
Hi everyone,

I need to replace my aging D-link 615. I was able to extend it's life with Gargoyle.(Thank god for the daily auto reboot feature!)

What model would you recommend to use with Open-WRT(Gargoyle)? I'd put stability over performance on my list.

I don't need any specials hardware features. Wifi performance isn't really important. I need a 2nd AP anyway(old house).

After some quick searching, i couldn't find a definite answer. I plan to use the router for some gaming and the usual girlfriend stuff. I really like the QoS package Gargoyle has to offer. It's the main reason i want this firmware.

Thank you.

Since stability is your biggest goal here (you certainly get my vote!), you're probably going to want to stay back on Gargoyle v1.6.x for a while until 1.7 stabilizes. That really only means you can't opt for certain newer models like the Archer C7, but since you stressed that your needs are simple, no sweat there.

It would probably be nice to get a model with gigabit ports and at least single-chain N wifi (N150). TP-Link seems to command the bulk of the model choices, so perhaps a WR-1043ND or a WDR3600 would warrant a look. Alternatively, you might want to look at Ubiquiti models -- I'd wager certain models might be some of the most reliable hardware choices on the list (the bullet, especially). I'm sure certain Netgear models on the downloads list would also work -- but I prefer external antennas, so I usually look elsewhere, unless I'm planning on running the unit wired-only.

GL with whatever you choose!

Some routerboards can have openwrt installed directly or through metarouter. The rb450G is one of them but it has no wireless. It does however have a lot of flash and ram with gigabit ports. It is on the openwrt wiki.

All single core routerboards have metarouter. RouterOS has really nice QoS though.

openwrt supports a lot of hardware but the most supported ones are MIPS based.

From my understanding, I tought there was still some disconnection bug on the WAN side with the WR-1043ND. I could be wrong.

Did someone here had success with a specific build, on the WR-1043ND? (I've ran on 1.5.x with great results on my D-Link).

It seems TP-Link have lots of hardware revisions. I'll have to check what revision the store sells.

I don't know if i'll go the microtik way, TP-Link are easier to get around here.

Thank you for the replys.

Well, it seems i'll more than likely go toward a wireless router on the hardware side.

Could a moderator move the thread to the Wireless buying advice section.

Thank you
