Download Master feedback

After I tried several times the Download Master, trying to download large files, here's some feedback:

1. once transfer is in progress, internet bandwidth for all router clients severely drops, even when download/upload speeds in DM are capped in at about 20% of the available ISP bandwidth. Nothing like that happens when I download the same file using uTorrent on the client computer.

2. I hoped to help this situation by adjusting QoS, but router itself does not show up in QoS.

I think, in order for Download Master to be useful, this definitely needs to be addressed. Its traffic in the router must have the lowest priority, maybe with QoS. Also, as I wrote in another post, I'm sure that anyone who considers using it on regular basis, will highly appreciate an easier way to have current blocklist than running SSH script every time it's updated.

Personally I do not recommend that people use Download Master:

- It's an old version of Transmission, amongst other things it lacks support for magnets, and there are probably a LOT of bugfixes missing
- It also uses a quite old version of openssl, which probably has a fair share of unpatched security flaws (I think they use 0.9.6 or 0.9.7?)
- Download Master will also install and enable aMule, with no simple way to disable it. That means anything you download gets automatically shared my aMule. In addition to the privacy issues, it will also kill your network performance.

It's recommended that you manually install Transmission from Entware instead. See the various guides either in these forums or on the Wiki. Granted it's nowhere as simple as Download Master, but until someone wants to ask Asus for the complete source code to the package and start build an alternative Download Master (or Asus addresses those concerns), it's a safer bet IMHO.

Transmission remote GUI reports Transmission ver. 2.21 when connected to DM. Just for the record.

Hi, I have RT-N66U and I use DM a lot, every times a week, I add directly magnet links or direct links in tasks and I never have speed problems with large files (over 10-15Gb), Sometimes 2 or 3 at the same time.

I have QoS setting off and capped upload speed to 40 Kb/sec upload on DM (I have 1 MB upload connection) and of course amule disabled. Max Peers and max connections set on 1000.

BT inbuilt Client was one of the principal reason that I bought this router for having a hard drive always connected to the router. DLNA is the only thing that I don't use while DM is downloading.
