Also, does the Asus AX series have better security?

For "better security" I mean is the AX series more resistant to hacking?

Does it have an upgraded firewall / NAT / AIProtection or other additional protection?

The AX88U is no more secure than any other router here really, unless you include WIFI and such (WPA3 support). Asus and RMerlin fix security issues on a regular basis for all supported models.

No, however, the hardware acceleration is called "Runner" now, and Wireguard is now part of the 388 code branch.
Asus used to update their firmware regularly but now not... Last one for AC86U was March and it is already November.
The AC models have been determined to stay on the 386 code branch, that being said, it means less update frequency from Asus themselves. This means fewer GPLs for RMerlin to use. It sounds like the AC models will be in a feature freeze state, and that security will be maintained for now.
