Router too Hot

Biker

Regular Contributor
Had to replace an older Security Router recent and bought a Linksys RVS4000, now I have notice it's very warm to the touch. Open the box and found many parts very warm and the gigabit switch even tho its heatsink is very hot, it had no fan attached.
I was thinking of installing the proper size heatsinks throughout as needed using Enzotech Copper RAMsinks from Newegg and adding the coolermaster blue ice chipset fan/heatsink to the gigabit switch.
Question, has anyone else using this version router notice the amount of heat being displaced and have they mod the same to cool the unit.

Thanks

Even just putting a passive heatsink on the switch chip should help.
You can also look at something like a laptop cooler pad.

Thanks for the responds.
It has a passive heatsink on the switch, problem is all the other parts and switch just get hotter due to very bad air flow through the box. Have read the earlier versions had a small fan. So I pick up today different size heatsinks for RAM, GPU and Chipset, will cut to size if need be and use Arcticsilver thermal adhesive to mount to the hot parts, if I can get the switch heatsink off will replace with a better unit with fan, or if not, add a vent to the top cover above the switch and install a smalll chipset fan and wired to power supply on pcb forcing hot air out of the box.

BTW, I hoping to get more out of ya forum since I am building two new workstation and a working server for good reasons, mainly Supermicro boards

Foil is usually used for RF shielding.

I wouldn't bother changing heatsinks. Just improve the airflow using a simple external fan or cooler pad.

I did a few things which should help, added heatsinks to all the other components that are warm and installed a small chipset fan set for 8volts off the input pwr feed; keeps the noise down, onto top cover, middle which is working very nicely. Even the switcher is running very cool now.

Biker, did you put a thermo heat sensor so that the fan doesn't have to run cont.?

No, I really want it to run all the time, I found the right speed to keep it all cool so it's spinning slowly. Those chipset fans can run at different speeds.

Inside and out, sure, can I upload or do I need to use another photo forum to link too.

Will do then, just give me a day or two, have to take the unit off line, then do a image re-size for the attachment...

Found the time to take it off-line, added three pics.
The SPDT switch has a full run position and slow speed by way of a resistor, pwr is taken off the DC plug before the Commom Mode Rejection Coil, so there is no fan EMF on the Reg DC line. The fan outside the case at full speed was very quiet, inside the plastic case it howl somewhat. Set to slow speed you have to be on top of the unit to hear the fan. The heatsinks are from a kit to Mod Graphic Cards and or other Devices, you can get them in Copper format as will, which most of the time I use the pure Copper form that are thermal Adhesive to parts. I cut the yellow wire from the Fan off, it's just a feedback line.

Thanks for posting the pix. Nice work. Hope it's worth it! :)

It was...I do that to everything I buy, even Supermicro MB, re-view them for possible heat issues then add changes. Here's an older Supermicro MB which I added heatsinks too.
