RT-AC68U Firmware Version 3.0.0.4.385_20433

I've run the official Asus firmware of ages. I always update simply by clicking the firmware update check button but for at least the last week (could be since I installed 385_20433, not sure?) the check button just shows "The router is checking the ASUS server for the firmware update" and spins forever. Is anybody else seeing this?

I am afraid the solution is to revert the router to factory defaults and manual configure it again.

A funny thing I noticed:
Asus does not publish GPL's for known trouble versions firmware:
Missing versions are e.g.:
3.0.0.4.385.20253 (CPU spikes), firmware still available.
3.0.0.4.384.81039 (slow GUI and httpd CPU load peaks), totally withdrawn.

For the latest 3.0.0.4.385.20433 the GPL is published.
