SFP ONT Stick - BE88U - IPTV

BorjaAday

New Around Here
I tried installing an SFP Stick ONT on my Asus BE88U router, but I ran into a major problem.

My ISP is Movistar, and it offers tagged traffic in 3 VLANs. There's a profile already created in the Asus firmware that works perfectly. The problem arises when configuring the router with the SFP port as the primary WAN. When activating the SFP, a message appears warning that it will disable IPTV, and when activating IPTV, a message appears stating that it will revert to the 10Gb RJ45 port as the primary WAN port.

I'd like to know if there's a solution and if this limitation is due to the firmware or the router's hardware. The ONT synchronizes perfectly with the OLT, as tested on a manageable switch, but if the router doesn't allow me to activate the IPTV service, I'll never get connection.

I want to clarify that I currently have everything working (Internet, IPTV and VOIP) with an external Huawei ONT, but I wanted to take advantage of the SFP port to avoid having another device on the table with its corresponding cables.

Thank you in advance, I will give you any additional information you may require.

For this router, you don't need to adjust this under LAN, but under WAN.
On the Internet Connection tab, enter the provider's VLAN. On the DUAL WAN tab, enter the primary WAN.

Thanks for your response! I’ll give it a try, but I’m afraid it won’t work with my ISP. My ISP provides traffic over 3 separate VLANs, one for internet, one for IPTV, and one for VoIP. In this case, it only lets me specify one VLAN, which I assume should be the internet one, but that will probably cause my TV set-top boxes to stop working. I’ll try it and update the forum.

Best regards!

I'm exactly at the same situation. I want to use this router as the only one to get internet through the SFP port with a GPON module and with IPTV working. I tested many configurations. The better one I get it to work is:
Dual WAN, setting SFP as primary WAN
Configuring PPPoE has primary WAN in VLAN 6/1
LAN, setting IPTV as "Movistar Triple VLAN" (after the advertisement message of change of WAN port, you have to ensure that the WAN have remained in SFP.

With that configuration almost everything is working, internet, live streaming in TV, except for TV menus, zapping and delayed playback of programs which are too slow or even not working at all.

Looking for a solution, I conclude that the problem is that IGMP Proxy is not working when IPTV is setted, at least using SFP port as WAN interface. Because Movistar need unicast for TV.

Anyone could confirm this assumption of the problem and or know if it could be workaround. Or anyone know if it would be fixed in the future?

Best regards.

I'm going to test it now, and I'll tell you, it could be due to how the GPON module handles multicast traffic. In principle, the module I purchased is compatible and should work fine, although I can't access the GPON module configuration from the router, which makes me suspect it's not compatible. Also, I think that when I activate IPTV it automatically changes my main WAN to 10GB RJ45 WAN.

What I'm doing is configuring it from a manageable switch with an SFP port, and I've verified that it reaches O5 status, but I haven't been able to terminate the PPPOE session.

By chance, are you also with Movistar? What GPON module are you using? I don't know if you speak Spanish.

I'm going to try what you told me and update the forum with my tests.

Best regards!

I've run the tests and haven't found much out:

- It's true that changing the primary WAN port to a 10GB SFP disables IPTV.

- When I reactivate the Movistar Triple VLAN profile, despite the message that the primary WAN will become 10GB WAN/LAN, it remains on SFP.

- I think my problem is that the module isn't compatible with the router, as the only thing the router tells me is "network cable disconnected," and even if I enter the GPON IP, I can't access it.

- I've set the SFP as the primary WAN, and I've set VLAN 6/1 for WAN to 802.1Q. It hasn't affected anything, as it still tells me the cable is disconnected.

- The GPON is fine, as when I connect it to the managed switch, I see it reaches O5 status. I'll have to try another GPON to see if by chance this one isn't compatible or if the Asus router has a problem.

The GPON module I am using is the GPON ONU SFP CPGOs03-0490 v.2.0 from CarlitoxxPro which in theory is compatible with the Movistar Triple VLAN, but it seems not to be compatible with my router.

Yes, I speak Spanish and I have Movistar too.

My GPON is GPON-ONU-34-20BI from FS.com and it took me some time to access by IP to configure the PLOAM Password which is needed to authenticate on Movistar system. After playing around with the configuration I realized that to access to module GPON was only possible if I put router in Bride mode. I don't know why but I can't access to the module in Router mode, maybe you can try. Once you have access to the GPON you have to set the PLOAM Password in the module (I first also set the SN but it was not enough) after that you can change again to the router mode and go to the SFP WAN + IPTV configuration. You should get at least at same situation than me, I guess. My module is theorically also compatible with triple VLAN Movistar and I think it is really, because I have authentication working and live channel are working. However, zapping, menus and time-shifted programs are not working as expected.

Let's see if you manage to get to the same situation than me to confirm the same problem or otherwise to confirm a module GPON problem with multicast management.

Good luck!

I've retested, but to no avail. It only gets past "The internet cable is disconnected." I think the error is due to the synchronization between the GPON and the ASUS RT-BE88U router.

First, I understand that you put the router in bridge mode only for the GPON configuration and then returned to router mode to do the rest of the configuration.

On the other hand, I'll explain what I'm doing step by step to see if I'm doing something wrong:

1. In the WAN section, under Dual WAN, I select 10G SFP+ as the primary WAN. (Doing this disables IPTV.)

2. In the WAN section, under Internet Connection, I enable 802.1Q with VLAN 6/1.

3. I enable IPTV again with the "Movistar Triple VLAN" profile and accept the warning message.

4. After doing this and returning to the WAN section, I see that the primary WAN is still marked as 10G SFP+ under Dual WAN. However, all I see is this message: "The network cable is disconnected."

I've never been able to get past the "The network cable is disconnected" message, not even without enabling IPTV and leaving only VLAN 6/1 on 802.1Q. This leads me to believe it's a GPON synchronization error that's not compatible with my router, or it's simply a fault with my router.

A little more information: I'm using ASUS Merlin in the latest version available for this model, and I'm sure the GPON module is working because I assigned the IDONT to it when connected to a manageable switch, and everything is working perfectly. When I enter its web interface, I see it's synchronizing with Movistar in the O5 state. This leads me to believe that either the GPON isn't compatible with my ASUS router, or my ASUS router has a problem with the SFP port, as it's not detecting it as connected.
