just looking for a recommendation for a good 5g sim router. 5g is patchy where I live so important that it switches well between 5g and 4g

Well, for 5G to work you need 4G/LTE anyway as the foundation.

Providers give you one for free when you sign up for T-Mobile / VZW. They're not the best devices but, they do work.

So, if you're looking for a "router" with a "modem" built into it then you're looking at the likes of

They're pricey to say the least. Now if you're willing to do a little DIY you can get a modem enclosure and modem separately and build your own to use the 5G as a dongle to an existing device. There are even PCIE options if you have a PC to plug the card into that would allow for it work. You can get a 5G modem for a whole lot less than a prepackaged router. It also depends on where you're located as prices and bands vary by network.
