Unbound as a recursive dns

Would something like this be possible using Merlin FW/Entware?

https://docs.pi-hole.net/guides/unbound/

I'm using it right now on my Pi-hole setup on a Pi 3B+ and it works great, although Unbound on Raspbian is a bit old.

Pros/cons?

Not really.

But I'm of the opinion that using TLD DNS servers for personal use is a rather selfish use of the internet's resources. A bit like using Stratum 1 NTP servers. But it's only my opinion.

But doesn't it use the same resources really, just cutting out the middle man?

Maybe. But I'd have thought that you're likely to hit a cached entry in one of the upstream servers, whereas going top-down you'll never hit one.

Unbound has a cache too so the most used requests will probably be in the cache after the first visit. But sure, I can see your point...
