Hello,
Last week I updated the firmware of my two routers Asus RT-AC66U and RT-AC87U from stock Asus to Merlin 378.55.
Everything went well, Asus device discovery keep seeing both, but the last couple of days I am not able anymore to log in to any one of the routers.
I tried with Firefox (40.0.3), Chrome and I Explorer but same results...
Tried reboot the routers, clean the browser cache, same result..
Any idea about why and how I can solve this problem ?
Thanks

When I get this, it's because I've done something stupid eg not realised my login device has locked onto the guest network on which I've banned LAN access.

You say you can't login; what happens? Do you get the login page on 192.168.1.1 (or whatever) or do you get a failure to connect at all? What error message?

Have you tried to login from a different device? Did you alter any setting on either router (or the login device) prior to the problem? And everything else eg Internet access, pinging both routers (assuming you could do that beforehand) is perfectly normal?

Thanks for the help.
When I say I cannot login anymore I mean that the login page doesn't appear.
The IP of the 66U is 192.168.1.20 and the 87U is located at 192.168.1.34.
When I put these numbers in the browers as an address, it cannot connect to that "site". ..the login page doesn't load. I keep receiving an error no matter which browser or which device I use.

I use these routers as an access point.
The main gateway is a Fritz!Box 7390 and in the "page " of this router where I can check all the devices connected to the local network I see both asus routers with their correct IP as they are there.
No error or anything strange.

Internet connection is fine as it is the wireless from both Asus routers.
It's just the login page doesn't appear anymore.

Use Asus's Device Discovery tool, in case their IPs had changed.

With Asus device discovery I see both routers and both have the same IP address.
It's not changed.
When I press configure, the login page doesn't appear.
It cannot load and I get an error.
It's like when you try to load a website and you put a wrong address in it.

Sorry for my bad English....I speak Italian.

I really don't have an idea what can cause this problem
I run an anti virus scan and nothing was found.
Same with Spybot S&D.
I have some knowledge about network....never had any problem connecting or configuring a network or modems and routers...
This is really something that I have no idea what the cause could be.

Now I am at work.
When I go home I will try to disable the firewall and try.
Will post the result.
Thanks

Try default 192.168.1.1 then enter basic default password if needed.

Once you've entered the router then change your IP.

Hello,
so..back home...tried 192.168.1.1 but came up the fritzbox main page ( rightfully so).
Disabled the firewall, no success...same problem.
When I try to connect with Chrome I see this message :

"The web page is not available" , and under it I see this message :
"ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED"
I can press the "reload" button but nothing change..

This was mentioned before. Try using the Asus recovery disc and use a different browser like Firefox.

Hello, Swiso

I'm a little confused now: you have just mentioned a Fritzbox router at 192.168.1.1. At the start you only mentioned 2 Asus routers: AC66U and AC87U.

I'm sure it would help if you first gave us a description of your network eg why you have (at least) 3 routers. And where in this network is the device you are using to try to access the Asus routers.

So, the Fritzbox is 192.168.1.1. What are the addresses of the other 2 routers? And what is the address of the device you are using to try to log in?

Martin, check post #4...there you have IP of both Asus routers.

Anyway, here is my local network.
My "office" is located on the attic (3rd floor), and here I have the PC's , DSL router (fritzbox 7390) and the RT-AC66U

Main gateway --> Fritzbox 7390 (wifi turned OFF while not so good) (192.168.1.1)
from 7390 --> Netgear switch GS108

At the GS108 I have connected :

ASUS RT-AC66U (192.168.1.20) and it operate as an access point.
1 shared HP printer (192.168.1.40)
1 PC (192.168.1.32)
1 Notebook (192.168.1.37)
1 Powerline (Devolo dLan 1200+) plug that bring the network two floors below
1 SAT decoder Humax iCord (192.168.1.30)
1 Synology NAS (192.168.1.29)

Two floors below, I have another Powerline Devolo dLan 1200+ pluga that "receive" the line from the GS108, and here it go to the ASUS RT-AC87U, that is setup as an access point. (192.168.1.34)

At the Asus 87U I have connected :
1 smart TV Panasonic (192.168.1.28)
1 SAT decoder Panasonic (192.168.1.27)

I have Avast as AV and it has a Firewall (it is the default FW), I disabled completely the FW but not solved the problem.

I must say that I had absolutely no problem connecting to both Asus routers before changing the firmware.
I changed the firmware while sometimes it happened that the wifi connection suddenly disconneted.
I lookd for solutions and found that lot of people was happy with Merlin firmware.
So I decided to go for it.
I didnt change anything in my network connection, just the firmware.
Thanks

P.S : I tried with my PC, with the Notebook, an iPad, my mobile phone....same results.

Many thanks especially as you have gone to a lot of trouble to explain your network in such detail. I very much hope it now helps others, far more knowledgeable than I, to offer more successful suggestions.

Oh, one thing: when you run the command ipconfig /all from your Windows machine, does it throw up anything helpful such as confirming what the device can and cannot see?

Hello Swiso,

I don't want to put you to any wasted effort, but could you temporarily alter the Windows language to English and re-run ipconfig /all? I daresay that your previous posting contains enough information, but if it was in English, I'm sure more people would look carefully at it and hopefully give you some ideas.

Many thanks

Martin

Thank you; I hope your efforts aren't in vain. I see no mention of either of the secondary Asus routers, but I don't know, given your setup, if one would expect to see them listed, and if so, what that implies. But I expect we'll soon find out.

Thanks again for the information.

No problem, thank you to the help you provide.

When I go home from work I will try to revert to standard Asus firmwares and see if the problem go away.
I will report the results.
Thanks to all who provided helpful tips.

Can you wait a while? Reverting back to standard Asus firmware is a big, time-consuming step for what might possibly turn out to be a simple problem. If possible, I think it would be wise just to hang on a day or so and see if there's further advice.

By the way, have you tried accessing the 2 routers by plugging your laptop into the Fritzbox (and/or the Netgear switch) by ethernet cable?
