New Around Here
I upgraded to this FW Version 3.0.0.4.386.43129 last night on an AiMesh rt-ac5300 main node + (using also 3 rt-ac68u nodes) and it broke the connection to my cable modem. Essentially admin page showed X for internet connectivity. I hard rebooted the primary and all the nodes but that did not fix things. I even bounced the modem and then bounced all nodes sequentially starting with rt-ac5300, but still no connection. I flashed back to Version 3.0.0.4.384.82072 and magically things came back to normal.
I read in another thread that 386 requires a factory reset of the router!!?
If so, then why was I able to perform the FW upgrade from the router's webGUI/admin page? Also nowhere on the asus support site it says to perform a factory reset.

AI Mesh as well. Running AC5300 & AC66

3.0.0.4.386.43129 failed to update and now I can't log into the Router via the phone App or the webGUI. What an awful experience. A full hardware reset looks like the only option for me.

ASUS should pull this update until they fix these issues.

Fixed. Steps followed:

  1. Reset the AC5300, turned OFF the AC66B1 mesh nodes.
  2. Turned on the AC5300, connected via webGUI
  3. Manually installed 3.0.0.4.386.43129 on the AC5300 - success
  4. Turned ON the AC66B1 mesh nodes, connected via webGUI
  5. Manually installed 9.0.0.4.386.41994 (beta) on the AC66B1 - success
  6. Relaunched Phone App - success
I understand having to occasionally manually update the Firmware, especially for beta fixes, but I think its a mistake to have the Asus Router GUI prompt users into a firmware update that will essentially brick their internet. I hope others find the manual update process works OK for them.

So far so good for me Sir.

I had it update via web UI using auto check firmware for 3.0.0.4.386.43129.

I'm on 1.5 days running without any glitch and keeping my finger crossed.

There is a new release for the AC66U_B1. You have to manually upload over the beta.

Hey Wayne,
That's great to hear. I will perform manual upload of FW and hard reboot all nodes.
all the best,

Update - June 10:
I managed to update all 3 Node (rt-ac68u) & the main router/rt-ac5300 during the mass update via the web-gui. The problem remains that the rt-ac5300 cannot connect to the cable modem/internet (red X on the connection to the modem in the gui).
P.S. -> it seemed that all the times that I did the auto and manual updates (no factory reset) to the rt-ac5300, the flash took. However as I mentioned no internet connectivity. I read somewhere that if you are using a custom DNS (like pihole or some other public ones), you have to first set it back to auto. I will try it when I can afford the outage.
P.P.S -> flashing the rt-ac5300 back to 3.0.0.4.384_82072 always fixed the problem.

Update June 18:
rt-ac5300 update to successfully to v3.0.0.4_386_43576-g649d261

process done to make sure it took:
  1. shut down all nodes & rt-ac5300
  2. bring up only rt-ac5300
  3. change DNS setting from pihole to auto (ISP)
  4. reboot rt-ac5300
  5. after logging into gui, manually upload rt-ac5300 FW v3.0.0.4_386_43576-g649d261
  6. noticed that rt-ac5300 came back up with full/good connectivity
  7. unplugged rt-ac5300 from power, waited 15-20 secs and powered back up
  8. replaced DNS to my pihole and verified all good with pihole
  9. verify connectivity and wifi access are good (ethernet & wifi tests) --> all good
  10. bring up the 3 rt-ac68u nodes one by one and verify connectivity is good --> all good and all 4 devices are online
Note: rt-ac68u nodes are still showing up to date and running v3.0.0.4_386_43129-g60defb2
