New Around Here
Hey all,

I recently purchased a new RT-AC66U and am trying to get my AT&T Beam (Aircard 340U) working with it. It seems to detect it and in network map it shows a "usb_3g_dongle" and the model name shows "AirCard 340U." When I set the USB modem settings I pick:

Location: USA
ISP: AT&T
APN service(optional): broadband
Dial Number: *99***1#
PIN code: blank
Username: blank
Password: blank
USB Adapter: Auto

From what I have read these settings should work. I gave ASUS a call and they said this was an unsupported model number (even though it is the newest dongle from AT&T). I have the latest router version (3.0.0.4.374_979). Attached below you can find the router log. I would love to hear what some other people around here say. Thanks in advance for the help.

Did you make sure Dual WAN was enabled? After that make sure you reboot the router with your USB modem plugged in once you've saved your settings.

Did you make sure Dual WAN was enabled? After that make sure you reboot the router with your USB modem plugged in once you've saved your settings.

I checked to make sure Dual WAN was enabled. Attached are some more screen shots of what I see. The first picture shows my network map. You can see that the dongle is being detected. The second picture is the "detailed" information that shows when I click on the dongle on the network map page. The third picture shows the settings that I set for the dongle. After clicking apply and waiting the router defaults back to the 4th picture settings. Someone please help me!

Only a limited list of USB dongles are supported. If Asus says it's not confirmed to be compatible, then there won't be much you'll be able to do about it. Some devices can eventually be added by Asus, others are too "alien" in how they work to be possible to support them.

Another USB Modem Issue

Only a limited list of USB dongles are supported. If Asus says it's not confirmed to be compatible, then there won't be much you'll be able to do about it. Some devices can eventually be added by Asus, others are too "alien" in how they work to be possible to support them.

First post so first opportunity to thank you Merlin for your wonderful firmware.

Here's my issue:

According to the Asus support page, http://event.asus.com/2009/networks/3gsupport/, the USB modem LG AD600 USB LTE AT&T is supported for the RT-N66U.

However when I try to use it, it is not on the dropdown list for AT&T on the USB modem page and it is not recognized. I purchased that specific modem because of the support note saying that it would work.

I have one of these routers at home and one at work and both have the same problem. The work modem is running Asus 3.0.0.4.374.720 while the home modem is running your 3.0.0.4.374.33. The LG USB modem does not seem to be recognized by either.

I contacted Asus support and they simply wanted me to RMA the router.

Is it possible that somehow the drivers for the modem have been inadvertently removed? Would it be difficult to add them back?

Any suggestions?

Here is the system log for the home router running 3.0.0.4.374.33:

From what I can tell, your modem is seen as a CD instead of as a modem (many of these devices support both modes). No idea if it's a regression in 374.726 or what, I have no way of testing this.

See if the same issue occurs with Asus's 374_726, if it does I recommend contacting their tech support about it.

Thanks for the prompt reply!

I have already contacted Asus but their response is to want to RMA the router. It's hard for me to believe that both routers need to be replaced!

The LG USB modem works fine on an old Cradlepoint router and I can get a Verizon USB modem to work with either Asus router.

Here is the log from my work modem that is running Asus 3.0.0.4.374.720.

Thanks again!

I can't help you any further with this, sorry. I have no way to test USB modem support, so this is an area of the firmware I don't work with.

This is the reply I got from ASUS support.

AirCard 313U as a stand-in?

@fosser2 -

I too am anxiously awaiting Asus to add the 340U to the supported modem's list. My experience with them leads me to believe that IF they ever do add it, it will likely be after the 340U is out of production (based on when previous iterations of supported USB dongles showed up on the list).

When I first got mine, I spent about a full week trying to get the 340U to function. I even re-flashed the it with an update I found somewhere online that enables it to automatically connect to the internet without any other PC software installed - thinking that this might fix it... No Joy!

For now, I purchased a slightly used Aircard 313U on Amazon for $50  and dropped in the SIM I got with the 340U. I tested it first on my laptop-worked fine! I then set it up on the RT-AC68U. After trying to get it to function about 5 times, I successfully got it to work with the router. Still not clear on the actual specific steps that made it work, but it's working.

The 313U is also AT&T LTE compatible and I have seen speedtest.net download tests in the range of 12 - 22 MB/S... (Far better than I expected :D).

I think the 340U should get slightly better throughput when (IF) it is ever supported by a future firmware, but for now I have a functional gateway that gets decent speeds in my RV.

Good luck to you -
