Hi sorry if this seems like double post but have to be sure
before i purchase the asus rt ac68u router. There are some
few things to ad to my question?

My consern is i know nothing about firmware like
merlin ddrwt or what it's called? Is that urgent to get those firmware in a hurry or can i just settle with the
orignal updates on the rt ac68U when they appear?

And finally i use the Netgear cg3000 modem wich also works as a
wireless router and i have to bridge the new asus 68u from the netgear
are there any issues with this setup?

Many questions but i need a little advice:)

The beauty with RMerlin's firmware is that you can switch between official Asus versions and his at will (with a full and proper reset to defaults, of course).

Use/try the Asus firmware until you need something more - then switch to RMerlin and if needed, go back to where you were quickly. With a restore to defaults and then simply restoring a settings file you made/saved (with the settings for the original firmware you're restoring to).

Call your ISP and ask if you (or they) can set the modem to Bridge mode (only actually do that when you're going to connect a router to it's ports though; otherwise, any device you connect will be visible by anyone in the world).

Before setting it as a Bridge - connect to it via Ethernet cable and turn off the radios so they don't interfere with the new router you get.

If they don't allow you to Bridge the modem (don't give up too easily with them!!!) - you should still be okay (although double NAT'ed). If this will be limiting to you will depend on the specific's of your equipment and network usage patterns. We should be able to help you though at that point too. :)

Does that address your concerns?

Just make sure you understand the threads in links below. If you don't understand them, it would be very important, in my opinion, that you ask.

Hi well guess i'm lucky because my internet provider called Yousee
allready made my netgear cg3000 an open configuration vs working
as bridge to my current dir655 router:):)

Now i'm sure i will get the U68 next week when my birthday is
comming up late janurary:) Had the ac66u for my first priority
but why not get the model bigger with the nice upright position
and better hardware:)

Thank's to all you nice folks here at snb and "I'll be back" with
newbie guestions on setting it up and opening some ports to my
synology nas.

Oh,last question for now, any known issues
with macbook computers? I have macbook air
and macbook pro.

Only known issue I know is it has a virus called OS/x. :D:D:D

(Plus RMerlin's versions offer settings for Mac's too). :)

We have 2 macbook connecting to RT-AC68U. There is no issue what so ever. You can also use it as Time Machine when connecting external drive the router.

"You can also use it as Time Machine when connecting external drive the router"

That sounds nice something i need to look in to when
i got the 68U up and running:)

Thank's again you are too kind:)

AC68U is a great router hardware wise, but Asus and Broadcom are taking their sweet time to fix all the issues. So if you want to stick with oem firmware, be prepared to wait a while.

Kong has a good firmware out from DD-WRT and there is a Tomato firmware in the works as well.
