Hi all,

I bought a Asus RT-AX58U earlier, but the wifi was very instable, so i returned the router.
The protocol 802.11ax is around since August 2019, is it mature already?
Was it the protocol that was lacking or the router?

I'm searching for a router what can reach good speed (preferable also with a openvpn client (if posible)).
The Asus RT-AX58U stopped at 45 mbps with openvpn out of a 225 mpbs without.

But a fast and stable router is what i desire most.
How more i read the forum, how more insecure i get for buying a new router.
So i hope some of you could give me some advises.

Here a bunch of interesting routers and comments/reviews that I've read:
Asus RT-AX92U - Stable, fast but no AsusWRT-merlin.
Asus RT-AX88U - Slower processor
Asus RT-AX86U - 1.8 ghz processor better for OpenVpn.
ROG Rapture GT-AC5300 - Good processor, AC protocol less future proof, highly priced.
ASUS ROG Rapture GT-AX11000 - Good processor, AX protocol but expensive..
Asus RT-AC86U - AC protocol, stable but maybe less future proof.

Another question about AsusWRT-merlin.
Some routers are from may 2015 and are not longer supported after that (e.g Asus RT-AC3200).
Is that causing security issues for the software?

Hopefully you can give me a kick in the right direction

Take AX86U because it is at the right point in terms of price, support Merlin, support openvpn high speed, have 2.5Gbps port

or AX11000 if you have extra money as it supports same as AX86U but have extra band (5GHz-2), RGB and ROG features if don't use Merlin.

So i got bad luck with the Asus RT-AX58U router? And the protocol is stable?

What happens with the router if merlin support ends?
Is it a security risk?

WiFi 6 (AX) is a released standard. Whether or not it is stable depends on what is done with it.

When firmware support ends, new features and fixes are no longer offered. Whether or not that is a security risk depends on the security fixes required, if any, and your exposure to the risks.

Some router OEMs have a better record of firmware support than others... I would favor them and not worry about individual router models and WiFi protocols outside of the usual feature/performance/cost considerations.
