RT-AC68U on 380.66 - QoS doesn't work, terrible bufferbloat

New Around Here
150 Mbps Down
15 Mbps Up
Suddenlink

I have an AC68U and SB6183. I've tried every combination of QoS settings and even with extremely conservative bandwidth limits (even as low as 40 Mbps!) none of them seem to do anything. I start a download and ping times immediately jump from the ~20 ms range to 200 ms or much, much higher and stay there for the duration of the download. Even if I limit the speed through the program (like Steam or Origin for example) to less than half my max speed it still will spike quite frequently. I'm getting extremely frustrated and don't understand what I'm doing wrong. codel was working perfectly on my old router (N56U) and modem (SB6120) with OpenWRT, I bought the AC68U because despite the old router doing well with bufferbloat, it was severely limiting our download speed and I assumed the newer ASUS would perform better because I was under the impression that it has a faster CPU. Getting rid of bufferbloat is very important to me, as I live with two other people and we all enjoy downloading things and playing video games where ping is of the utmost importance.

Any help is appreciated.

I recommend 380.67. Leave IPV6 off, NAT Acceleration on, Adaptive QOS on manual Upload Bandwidth 13.5, Download Bandwidth 150, fq_codel and do not select a preset at first. Make sure your Trend Micro signature is up to date (mine is at 1.174). Get it working then look for the FreshJR script for QOS. I am running a RT-AC66U B1 which has the same processor as the AC68U and regularly get "A" bufferbloat from DSLREPORTS. Wish I had your download speed ...

what do you mean by Trend Micro signature?
edit: this is with 145/13.5, better than before but still leaves much to be desired. hurts my speed a lot as well. maybe i'm just asking too much of the hardware and i need something more powerful. also the speed climbs, ping stays kind of steady around 40-100 ms, then as it hits the limit/goes over it, huge ping spike and then the speed plummets back down rinse repeat. kind of annoying.

Also not sure what he means by this?
Check Administration, Firmware Update page. The signature update version is there and they will, in time, auto update but you can do a manual check.

k, it's on 1.176 now, was 1.110 or something before i think.

These issues look like the PUMA 6 issues

https://www.dslreports.com/shownews...-Puma-6-Chipset-Have-Some-Major-Issues-138411

Is the SB6183 puma based or boardcom.

I don't think you issue is the router at all. This looks to be ISP and modem problem with all that high spiking.

The 6120 you had is a 4/4 channel modem vs the SB6183 is 16/4 these type of issues are seen more on high channel modem's that is why you never noticed it on the older modem. And unfortunately you need the high channel modem for faster speeds.

Here are my results to the same ip

I'm using a Hitron CGN3ACSMR 24/8 modem on a 250/20 package and it is PUMA 6 however I have an updated firmware on my modem from Hitron to address the latency spikes.

why not pinging your router to see ms between router and pc
ping 192.168.1.1 -t
and
pc and modem (with the router between) :
192.168.100.1 -t ( ip depend of your modem)

ping between my pc and router is always <1 ms, ping between my pc and modem is <1 ms with low bandwidth usage, between <1 ms and 2 ms with high bandwidth usage.
