US bans sale of all *new model* non-US made wifi routers

What? Is this real or someone made a joke website?
Totally real, this has been discussed within the tech circles a few months ago when it was first announced. The website content has been through a few changes since the initial announcement, some of their initial claims were even more outlandish, they have been since removed.

The Verge has some good background - and none of it is good...

Unbelievable... cant tell AI jokes from reality anymore. I was 90% sure it's a fake website. Like... how? A golden T1™ phone with 12:00 Jan 20, 2025 on the screen and on 47 plan for $47.45... no way! If this is real... is the advertised "Mental Health & Wellness" feature working on the prototype?

Another wrinkle... any new FCC approved router may ask you for age verification before it allows login and ensure age verified network traffic.

I can see a whole new cottage industry of home assembled routers from parts.

Joke? If not, please cite your source.

A freshly set up asus BE router will ask you to confirm your age, but not validate. Until you've logged in and set the thing up it's not connected to the internet to run any validation.

Not quite. They just ask you if you are a legal adult, as some of their services require the consenting from an adult. I bet such a question is often buried within general EULAs as well, as you can`t ask to a 12 years old to consent to a EULA binding.

the software update is more troubling as that will be kicking in long before new routers are coming to market. We can thank tp-link for this as that last big security hole kicked this off.

Source of information, please. My BS meter is totally INOP lately.

Where is the source showing TP-Link as national security threat? What exactly "security hole" their products have or had and what it is different than let's say ASUS recent and ongoing security holes? I have a strong feeling none of this is actual national security threat and all about money arrangements.

i already posted links. and i never said it was different than the asus issues.. But from what i can gather it was a exploit that was much more widely taken adavantage off than asus resulting in a much larger bot network.

How do you know this isn't based on a "real security threat"?
I bet if you follow the money and see who will benefit then the reason will be clear.

If we're talking about logging into the router's admin GUI then I suspect there are some 12 year olds that would make better admins than so 60 year old politicians.
