Buy a NIB Asus RT-AC86U for $145 - No Store Receipt??

As the title suggests, I found a NIB Asus router still in original packaging and he only lives 15 minutes from me; however, he has no receipt as it was a gift to his father-in-law who never used the router. This is about $30 cheaper than I can get on Amazon right now and I'm tempted to buy it but wonder WHAT IF it's defective ... would I be able to contact Asus and get a replacement somehow under the factory warranty?

Shouldn't be a problem - just tell Asus it was a gift...
