New Around Here
I bought an RT-AC68U (CFE ver 1.0.2.1, boardrev 0x1100, HW_ver 170; was a TM-AC1900) that I initially installed Merlin's firmware on. After using it awhile, I decided to try out the AdvancedTomato firmware, which is what I had been used to on most of my previous (non-Asus) routers. I haven't had any problems with it, other than that it doesn't work well with an Asus RP-N53 range extender I use periodically. Merlin's firmware worked with it flawlessly. So I wanted to change back to the latest Merlin firmware, but even though I follow the instructions I've found from different sources, it doesn't work.

The first time I tried this, I used Tomato's GUI to upload it, which looked like it was uploading successfully but at the end reported that it had failed. I forget the error message, but it concerned me that I might somehow brick the router. So I Googled around and then tried this approach:
Power off router.
Hold WPS button while turning on power. (light flashes fast)
Release WPS button. Turn off power.
Hold Reset button. Turn on power. (light flashes slow)
Upload latest Merlin firmware (380.68) using Asus Firmware Restore Utility (on a Mac).
Reports success!
Reboot router- boots into AdvancedTomato with default config.
I've tried this twice with the same results.

Frustrating. Does anyone have an idea what I may be missing?
