Hi all, new here, and have to admit, I am starting from scratch.

I have an ancient N66U which have been doing it's job since the day I bought it in 2013. Only flashed with Asus' firmware update.

I am currently looking for a new router, but don't really know what to look for.

On my current router, I only use MAC filtering, and have used Open DNS to filter "unwanted" websites (porn) because I have young kids.
I have since removed Open DNS because it was creating problem with my amazon prime movies.

Anyway, what would be a nice upgrade that will not break the bank? I am no longer gaming, last one I played was BattleField 3 on my home built PC.

I would still want MAC filter, and use Open DNS or other alternatives. I also would like built in VPN if that is possible.

I use a cable modem (Cox) btw if that info is needed.

Thank you

Most recommended Asus routers are the AX86U Pro and the AX88U Pro. Maybe pricier than you want to spend but worth the bucks. AX68U is not recommended. AX3000 might be OK.

I am having no issues with OpenDNS and Amazon Prime Video.

The models you mentioned are $250+, but the Ax3000 is about $150. But I see 2 versions? Which one? The cheaper one seems to be the new model.
I was initially looking at the AX1800 model which is $67 right now.

The network is everything... be sure to consider the cost over the service life of the product.

The AX86U Pro is going for $220 many places including Amazon... not $250.

Coming next gen firmware 3.0.0.6.* will only run on the Pro models.

have you gotten more than what you paid for out of your N66, OP? the same goes for the models listed here and on Merlin's Supported Model list.
