RT-AC66U and AIMesh (not b1)

Okay, I think I believe that only the AC66U b1 can do AIMesh from what I read. I have tried the latest Merlin firmware as well as stock ASUSWRT to find that AIMesh is simply not available in the GUI. My question is whether there is any customer firmware out there that turns this feature on, or any other way? otherwise I will see if I can buy something newer that does support it.

It is not possible to run AiMesh on that router regardless of the firmware. You can still use it as a simple access point though.

So if I add it as a repeater to my main RT-AC86U, that sort of does the same job right?

Sort of. There'll be no central management or guest network support. And the problem with all repeaters, the repeated wireless band will have half it's maximum throughput compared to a wired access point.
