My goal is to securely view IP cameras from the coffee shop.

My setup would be:

Iphone >> public wifi >> my fios router >> my TBD vpn router >> my poe switch >> my ip camera
my current router is an R6400 with OEM firmware

Questions:
1) What's a good Asus router for this setup? (Read they were the best routers for loading open source firmware)

2) What's the best firmware for this Asus router?

I chose wireguard because I've read it's easier and faster. 3) Correct me if I'm wrong on that too.

I think there is only one, RT-AC86U still listed as experimental, but the last few weeks posts say it is stable. Still needs technical setup.

Most of us run Asuswrt-Merlin

GL-iNet - most of their devices support WireGuard Client/Server...

Based on OpenWRT...

My recent experience testing WireGuard client on gl-inet. The beta firmware interface makes the setup a breeze. Very nice improvement. Problem was the contraint of the CPU in the AR300M model and the geo distance to the server - half way across the globe from me. Still, nice improvement over OpenVPN.

@Himey97, I use OpenVPN server on Asuswrt-Merlin for remote access to some cameras and have no issues. Here are the instructions for how to setup the OpenVPN server on Asuswrt-Merlin and client devices if you want to compare.

You could setup a Wireguard server on a Raspberry Pi using DietPi, not too difficult.
