Recently switched to the Asus ROG GT-AC5300 from the RT-AC88U and found out the Merlin firmware isn't available. I believe the ROG GT-AC5300 is based upon the RT-AC5300. There are several visual differences in the firmware/appearance of the interface as well as some physical differences including twice the # of LAN ports (8 vs 4) and twice the memory (1024 vs 512 MB RAM, 256 vs 128 MB Flash).

Any plans to develop firmware for the Asus ROG GT-AC5300?

Not at this time, if ever. This is largely down to the unique internals of the router, and that Asus will probably rarely release GPL for it (which Merlin requires to be able to work on)

I believe he said he could do it.

As he could get it from ASUS. But it's more work and he doesn't get paid for this. And it be a one off build applicable to the 5300 only. And with 90/95% of people owning the 68U/88U etc it's neither worth the time nor effort.

But you might find a few people here you could build your own with as you're not the only one to ask this question.

I believe the ROG GT-AC5300 is based upon the RT-AC5300.

It's not. Completely different CPU and software environment.

quad core cpu, double ram, 2 qos ports, yes its different, the Gt-5300 has more cpu cores.

ohhhh, mi ac88u have problems with the second switch and im thinking to change thanks to amazon for de gt-ac5300 but for me is important merlin for aditional features in partitio jffs :-(

The GT-AC5300 is a dog's breakfast. I must have tried out about 6 different routers over the past month and it exhibited the most unreliable and bizarre behavior overall. I am sure that with decent firmware it'd be a great device, but since it's a kind of a developmental dead-end with hardware you'll probably not see in that combination again, I doubt as to whether even Asus will be updating the misbegotten firmware, let alone a benevolent third party. If you want to enter this class of routers with Asus, you'll probably be better off with the RT-AC5300 so you can at least have some firmware options.

That's a shame cause I'm considering getting one my self, Im quite tempted to import one if I have to lol. Just cheaper prices overseas.

It's a shame they can't get that router working well, I would love it for the USB performance, but I'll stick with my 3200 for now.
