Does anyone know if this update addresses the CVE-2023-39780 SSH exploit? I figure it does, usually Merlins stuff is ahead of the game. Just wanted to ask specifically since I did not see it addressed in the changelog.
This article is about the malware itself, not about a new security issue. That malware is getting installed through brute forcing of the login, or through old security issues (one of them going back to 2023 - long fixed).
I assumed as much, like I said every time I ask which is infrequent, Merlins firmware is well ahead. Thanks for taking the time to link as well.Old CVE from 2023. Discussion about it here: https://www.snbforums.com/threads/g...gn-affecting-thousands-of-asus-routers.94809/

I'm sorry, it's a newbie question, why set your metric to two? Wouldn't leaving it blank or setting it to zero zero be more preferable? The Google DNS may be hard coded into the FireTV. If so you may need to block the Google DNS using the LAN > Router page in the GUI. Example (the Gateway IP address is the router's address):

Did you follow the Asus-Merlin 3006 change log directions to enable the downgrade capabilities when flashing on top of Asus stock firmware 3006.102_37000 or greater? In case it's of interest, I picked up a shiny new RT-BE92U on Wednesday, immediately put this Merlin release on it and painstakingly set up all my personalization.
You indicated doing a factory reset, did you try doing a hard factory reset? A hard factory reset is slightly different than a factory reset.- NOTE: If flashing on top of Asus stock firmware 3006.102_37000
or greater, then you first need to enable downgrade
capabilities before flashing Asuswrt-Merlin on top
of it. Connect Over SSH, and run the following command:
nvram set DOWNGRADE_CHECK_PASS=1
After that, you can upload Asuswrt-Merlin through
the webui like any regular firmware upgrade.
This is only required when flashing Asuswrt-Merlin
for the first time.
1. Turn the router off.
2. Press and hold the WPS button and turn the router on.
3. Power light is on (keep holding the WPS button).
4. Release the WPS button after the power light is off.
5. Reboot your router by manually pressing the power button.
In general terms this is how AI explains it:I'm sorry, it's a newbie question, why set your metric to two? Wouldn't leaving it blank or setting it to zero zero be more preferable?
Yup. I basically hooked it up to my ChromeOS laptop out of the box to do enough preliminary setup to enable SSH, do the nvram thing, then upload Merlin.Did you follow the Asus-Merlin 3006 change log directions to enable the downgrade capabilities when flashing on top of Asus stock firmware 3006.102_37000 or greater?
Method 2. Well and truly nuked. You indicated doing a factory reset, did you try doing a hard factory reset? A hard factory reset is slightly different than a factory reset.

You indicated you "... painstakingly set up all my personalization" and were using a firewall-start script that is "admittedly a bit on the large side." As a troubleshooting step if you want to try Asus-Merlin again is to manually configure the router with very the absolute minimum number of non default settings then test the router. Do not use a firewall-start script file until you can verify the router working as expected with the basic limited settings.Yup. Yeah, my immediate goal was to eliminate "bad hardware" as a suspect by going back to stock. You indicated you "... painstakingly set up all my personalization" and were using a firewall-start script that is "admittedly a bit on the large side." Also its entirely possible if one used certain values or settings on an earlier Asus router that runs a different firmware track; those settings may, in likely very rare cases, possibly cause configuration issues with the 3006.102.x firmware. Best to try and use default settings where possible initially to verify the new router is working properly.
i bet most likely was because u used a conf from an old device? i didnt have any issue using Merlin on my BE92U though. No crashed, nothing. all doing good.Yeah, my immediate goal was to eliminate "bad hardware" as a suspect by going back to stock.
I did try with a vastly minimized firewall-start, but admittedly not *no* firewall-start. Next iteration, I'll definitely do that.
My settings, in the end, were fairly minimalist. I had a bunch of manual IP assignments originally via a dnsmasq.conf.add file on the previous (RT-AC86U) that I copied'n'pasted into the GUI on the 92U (since it now has a higher limit). That was the most painful part.
The one clue from the log is literally hundreds and hundreds of "mroute: pending queue full, dropping entries" lines, interspersed with "net_ratelimit: 7 callbacks suppressed" every dozen'ish. Then eventually "rcu: INFO: rcu_preempt self-detected stall on CPU", and it would reboot soon after. Googling reveals a few places where somebody asks what that first error means, but I haven't yet found an answer.
No importation was done at all. I know that's a bad thing. I literally re-entered each and every setting manually in the GUI. And there really weren't all that many.i bet most likely was because u used a conf from an old device? i didnt have any issue using Merlin on my BE92U though. No crashed, nothing. all doing good.
Thanks for that. I'll go hunting for the notes on firewall-start. I've never used the features you mention, but I'll see if I can find any clues.@bpsmicro, Another troubleshooting step for when you setup Asus-Merlin again. Don't setup AiMesh right off the bat. Get the router working first then add AiMesh later.
Keep in mind that the Asus-Merlin 3006 firmware is a major departure from the 386 and 388 Asus-Merlin firmware. If you used the same firewall-start script file (or code) that was used on either 386 or 388 firmware you should review that code. There are a number of past posted in the subforum on using firewall-start scripting on 3006 firmware. In certain cases one has to use different values due to the new inclusion of Guest Network Pro, VLAN and SDN features.
Yes but not quite; at least not in the HW sense, as I already wrote before it is just legislation per country/area(EU).I find in general each new generation of Asus router seems to have crappier and crappier 5GHz range than the ones before, so AIMesh becomes pretty mandatory fairly quickly. Even now with my 3-node mesh running I find the 5GHz coverage pretty lacking. :-(
