Beta Asuswrt-Merlin 3006.102.5 Beta is now available

Directly after a fresh boot:
I've seen something similar happen once a few weeks ago during testing but I have been unable to reproduce it since then. As verbose mode indicate tho these are not duplicate, they are different rules. I suspect it's a timing issue when configuring firewall rules.

- What router model?
- What type of traffic is configured on your VPN server (LAN, WAN or both)?

Regarding the rules, you're right - I didn't check it in verbose mode.

I have a RT-AX88U-PRO and VPN is configured to INTERNET only.
I can 100% reproduce the issue every time if I reboot the device.

I checked what happens if I configure VPN to BOTH with the following result

Code:
Chain OVPNSF (1 references)
pkts bytes target prot opt in out source destination
    0 0 ACCEPT all -- any tun21 anywhere anywhere
    0 0 ACCEPT all -- tun21 any anywhere anywhere
    0 0 ACCEPT all -- any tun21 anywhere anywhere
    0 0 ACCEPT all -- tun21 any anywhere anywhere

Additionally, in order to sort out some weird configuration side effects, I also started a second VPN server without changing any configuration (both in INTERNET only).
Results:
Code:
Chain OVPNSF (1 references)
pkts bytes target prot opt in out source destination
    0 0 ACCEPT all -- any tun22 !192.168.1.0/24 anywhere
    0 0 ACCEPT all -- tun22 any anywhere !192.168.1.0/24
    0 0 ACCEPT all -- any tun21 !192.168.1.0/24 anywhere
    0 0 ACCEPT all -- tun21 any anywhere !192.168.1.0/24
    0 0 ACCEPT all -- any tun22 anywhere anywhere
    0 0 ACCEPT all -- tun22 any anywhere anywhere
    0 0 ACCEPT all -- any tun21 anywhere anywhere
    0 0 ACCEPT all -- tun21 any anywhere anywhere

Let me know if I can do more tests.

Cheers,
Markus

I have a GT-BE98 Pro and since upgrading to Beta1 and now Beta2, all of my wired windows machines cannot exceed 250mbps. I have 3 of them. A Windows 10, a Windows 11, and a Server 2025, all of them are effected. Wifi testing on the same laptops and phones, I am getting 1.2gbs from multiple devices, but all of my eth attached devices are now maxing out at 250mbs. I speed test from inside the Merlin interface on the router gives me 1.2gbs. QOS is off and no settings where changed.

No such issues here.

Installed 102.5 beta 2 the other day on my BE88u. Everything seems to be working ok with the exception of my 5ghz radio. I noticed walking by my router that the LED light was off. When logging into the webui, i see half of the green wifi symbol lit.when i hover over this green wifi lcon, it lists my 2.4ghz channel as 11 (which it is) and the 5Ghz channel as 0. Site survey works for 2.4ghz but says 5ghz radio is disabled but under wireless settings everything is set to auto and i can see that as far as the UI is concerned, its on. It has been working fine since about mid January. Only thing I have changed is disabling wifi7 as it gave me grief on one phone that uses my network.

I am running asus mesh and thankfully, my two mesh nodes (ax58u and ac68u) are still broadcasting their 5ghz radios.

Any ideas on where to go from here short of a factory reset and reconfigure? These latest builds allow you to edit wireless settings in the 'Network' sub menu (where Guest, IOT and MLO settings live). Should I remove the 5ghz radio from here and re-add it? It seems strange that asus now lets you configure wifi settings in two places.

Any thoughts?

Edit: Attached image showing 5ghz disabled. I have tried to enable and disable the radio and apply settings several times. No luck. I never tried beta 1 Came from 102.4.

Seems that others are having issues with radios since beta 1. I think ill sit tight as my mesh nodes are still broadcasting 5ghz until maybe a new firmware is available.

Edit2: is there a way to ssh in an force the radio on?

On my 2Gbig fibre in this beta (beta 2) and previous beta (beta 1) I notice that the Internet Speedtest for uploads seems to be way off. Before the upgrade I was getting proper speeds but since the upgrade Im getting less than 200Mbps.

If I run a speedtest from a wireless device on the same network I get the following:
Screenshot 2025-07-22 at 6.52.11 PM.png

I know that Boost Mobile is in the same AT&T datacenter.
I know it could be an issue with the speedtest AT&T server but wanted to report just in case others might be seeing similar issues.

Wanted to add little more information:
Main Router is BE96U
Two mesh network nodes are RT-AX86U Pro
The two mesh network nodes and router are connected via 2.5GB network switch

The wireless laptop is connected to the closest RT-AX86U

Channel 0 usually indicates either the radio is crashed, or the settings are corrupted. Try first to do a complete power cycle of the router do reset the hardware. If it still fails, next step is to do a factory default reset and manually reconfigure it.

After that if it still shows channel 0 then you probably need to RMA the router.

This issue seems to have resolved itself after leaving overnight. Apologies for the false alarm.

I am planning to install 3006.102.5 on my GT-AX6000 main router when it comes out of beta. My AiMesh nodes (2xAX86U Pro and 1xAX86u) run stock Asuswrt latest version. When I upgrade the main router from Merlin 3006.102.4 to Merlin 3006.102.5, is it still OK to leave the AiMesh nodes at Asus stock firmware, or should they be upgraded to Merlin as well to get the latest wifi drivers? The asus stock firmware hasn't seen an update in a long time.

... is it still OK to leave the AiMesh nodes at Asus stock firmware ...
Yes. The general long standing recommendation by some here is to leave AiMesh nodes on Asus stock firmware due to several Asus-Merlin specific features being disabled when using Asus-Merlin on AiMesh nodes. Also apparently the AiMesh code in the firmware is closed source from Asus.

I just noticed ASUS (gt-be98 pro) firmware posted a updated dated 2025/07/18 - Version 3.0.0.6.102_37849 link

Applied Broadcom patch to resolve a potential 5 GHz Wi-Fi vulnerability that, in rare cases, could trigger temporary disconnections for connected devices; updating ensures normal operation and enhanced protection.

I noticed the beta 2 mention the following in the changelog...

- UPDATED: Merged GPL 3006.102_37957 for Wifi 6 devices.
- UPDATED: Merged GPL 3006.102_38757 for WIfi 7 devices.

are the broadcom fixes in this as well?

Yea, I am noticing mixed results as well...
fastspeedtest.jpg

routerspeedtest.jpg

lanspeedtest.jpg

Obviously my results show some inconsistency as well.. Above, you can see a speed test from my client on fast.com, then the router speed test, and finally the bottom speed test is a lan speed test from the same client to the router. Very very inconsistent...

Possible VPN bug in beta.

I use iDrive to backup my computer. It runs everyday. I also have a VPN running on my Asus GT-AX6000. Everything was running fine on 3006.102.4

Loaded beta 2 yesterday.

This morning, received a failure notice from the automated daily idrive backup. idrive log showed:

"Possible reasons: 1. Ensure that you do not have an intermittent Internet connection. 2. Check if you have granted the necessary privileges on local firewall settings for it to run correctly."

Opened idrive app to try a manual backup.
Received an error message

"Unable to connect to server, Reason: sendfailure"

Here is a screenshot.

idrive_With_VPN.jpg

Looked on Asus router's log...nothing added.

Shutoff VPN for my computer (using VPN Director and a rule setting my computer to WAN). I was able to run idrive app and do a manual backup.

Loaded 3006.102.4 and everything was back to normal.

Conclusion, there is something different in beta's VPN implementation.
