pihole and openvpn for mobile phone

i would like pi hole to work on my ios phone when on mobile LTE.

I have pihole set up on a raspberry pi 3.

I also have an open vpn server on my asus router.

When I connect my router's openvpn, pihole does not work. However, pi hole works when im connected to my network. What am I missing? Thanks
