Hi, I have an Asus RT-AC68U running Merlin 384.5 and I'm unable to update to 384.6. I've tried multiple times from different PCs and it shows that firmware is upgrading and it completes, but the firmware version doesn't change. Through the process, I never lost wifi, so I thought something wasn't working right. Normally, I lose wifi at some point during the upgrade. Also, it seems to have blown out my settings as well. I even did a factory reset and then tried to upgrade and it still didn't work. I've never had any issues upgrading before.

Any ideas?

If you are running scripts on yours router (AB-Solution, Skynet, pixelserv, dnscrypt, ect..) you may have a RAM issue. Turn off your router and unplug your USB stick. Then turn on and try to upgrade. This usually does the trick.

It’s only been a little over 24 hours, but it looks like 384.6 fixed the memory leak I was having with 384.5. I didn’t do anything special other than flash 384.6 on top of 384.5 and the free memory on my AC-88U has been holding steady at 377 MB (more than it was under 384.5). I did reject the two agreements though.

I also rejected the two agreements and one disabled DDNS, which had previously been enabled by the ASUS router app, and the other disabled all the Trend Micro protection features.

As soon as you enable them, the relevent agreement pops up again that you must agree to to use that feature. I've left DDNS off, as I'm not fussed about the app, but I re-enabled the malicious site blocking.

Is it an Asus RT-68U or a TM1900 ?

Missed that, sorry.

So I can't even go revert Asus stock firmware on this, that won't load either? I need to go to some gimped TMobile firmware?

You would need to ask TMobile , they are responsible for their exclusive model.

I got an AC86U yesterday and set it up with 384.5 and a factory reset.

It has been a long time since I upgraded a Merlin firmware, as I left my AC68U on 380.59, the version before ASUS added their firmware check.

Can I get away with flashing 384.6 over 384.5 without a factory reset? I don't fancy setting it all up again so soon.

Thanks!
Shouldn't be an issue Marky. I've had no probs with dirty upgrades on my 86U.

Upgraded my RT-AC5300 from 384.6 beta 1 to 384.6 followed by initialize and manual reload of settings. It is running silky smooth. Thank you, Eric.

I noticed one minor glitch.

Realised my macbook pro was not backing up via time machine - the last backup 2 days ago. It wouldn't start - the disk was not found. Indeed I tried to add a new backup destination and sure enough the router didn't even show up.

Went into usb apps/time machine & turned it off and back on again. Time machine now working
ASUS RT-AC3200

I finally upgraded from 380.70 on my RT-AC68W including a full reset and manual setup, basically following this guide: https://x3mtek.com/asuswrt-merlin-firmware-upgrade/

There is one issue I can't seem to solve with the open vpn server setup. Using my android phone I can connect fine locally via wifi but when I shut off wifi and go through my phone's cellular connection it doesn't work. The generated .ovpn file is identical to the old 380.70 version with the exception of the certificate. I've tried tweaking various settings but none seem to help. I've also tried enabling IPV6 in the router as my phone's cellular connection is using IPV6 but that didn't help. I also tried disabling the IPV6 firewall, that didn't help.

I have the log level at 6, here's what it looks like from the cellular connection (swapped in 1.2.3.4 for my actual IP):

The one thing I have noticed, is the bandwidth monitor is not showing any BW beening used. As I am typing I am downloading a ps4 game plus using netflix and it shows no gages moving back and forth like it use to with last fw?? Anyone else have this issue.

And yes did clean install, other than that it works fine for me.

First time poster here. I read through this thread and didn't see this issue mentioned.

I think I downloaded the release RT-AC86U_384.6 zip file. Normally the zip file contains a .trx file that is about 37MB in size which gets uploaded to the router.
When I unpack the zip file I have a file named "RT-AC86U_384.6_0_cferom_ubi.w" that is about 79MB in size. I've never seen this before. Did something get corrupted somehow?

Thank you in advance for your help.

I can't give you the technical explanation as to why, but my 86U updates have all been .w rather than .trx. It's expected, and no reason to suspect corruption.

This is the normal firmware file extension and file size for the AC86U.
