Guys, I apologize if this is a dumb question, or asked a million times before. I went through the first two pages of posts and did see anything that resembled what I'm trying to ask, but I may just not know enough to know what Im looking for.

Im using the V51 newest firmware on an Asus RT-N66U, and I'd like to figure out how to connect to it from work, or my cell phone, or something like that. Thanks for any push in the right direction

You have 3 options to do that:

1. Connect to the router WEB interface using HTTPS.
You should enable it in: Menu>Administration>System>Enable Web Access from WAN

2. Connect to the router using SSH.
You should enable it in: Menu>Administration>System>Allow SSH access from WAN

3. Setup an OpenVPN server and use one of the above as from within your internal LAN (in that case the above options to access from WAN should be disabled)

It is strongly recommended to use the third option due to security reasons.

Best case, think again if you really need to violate your network's security this way. Don't do it for casual convenience or just because it seems cool.
