The XT12 doesn't have any USB ports where I can put the USB dongle.

There are two ways as far as I understand:
  1. Use my unused AC66U_B1 which has Dual WAN capability. I could put a USB dongle in the AC66U_B1 and use it as primary WAN there, shut off the radios and connect the AC66U_B1 to the XT12 using an ethernet cable. Then configure the AC66U_B1 as the second WAN connection on the XT12 with failover if the first WAN connection fails.
  2. Find a mobile broadband modem and connect as above. The problem here is that most of those modems doesn't have an ethernet port, only a micro USB port for charging. I have searched for equipment with Ethernet ports but they are very hard to find unless very expensive.
Is there another way around this?

Very unreliable in Asuswrt. Read around people use small business routers like ER605 or custom scripts like this one in an attempt to fix it.
