for what its worth, I upgraded to 5.4b2
And initially I also thought I was affected. But then I discovered that my laptop was connected to the 2.4GHz wifi.
After reconnecting to 5GHz I got back the old speeds.

Also had issues with OpenVPN. Apparently IPvanish had removed both servers I was using from their pool. Before the reboot it was still working, but after the reboot it would no longer connect. Had to login to IPvanish and check the list of available servers to see that both my servers were gone.

So both things false alarm

Changes in kamoj-addon beta version 5.4b2
--------------------------------------------------
- Router Information: Wireguard Clients: Not displayed (@blueliner)

Hello,

Just tried 5.4b2. The WireGuard status is now showing up in the Router Information page. However the bottom line for WireGuard shows an error message:

Wireguard Client Status ERROR wg0: No wg0 23.xx.xx.xx

WireGuard appears to function properly (IP/leak test OK), and the Kamoj Add-on WireGuard page shows the green connected symbol and connected message. Log shows a successful ping at start-up (?):

2020-09-30 15:33:21 [WireGuard] wg-client 7425: 389.96:Information: PING a.root-servers.net (198.41.0.4): 56 data bytes 64 bytes from 198.41.0.4: icmp_seq=0 ttl=55 time=1571.8 ms

When running OpenVPN everything looks OK on the Router Information page. Is this perhaps just a result of my slow/high latency connection?

Thanks,
BL

Indeed. I can confirm that there appears to be an issue with the latest beta releases.
Measured on 5ghz network (5m from router).

With the latest version:

My internet speeds are slow and inconsistent so I can't verify any drop in speed with my router.... but a speed test shows it is at least running within its normal range (which can easily vary by 50%).

BL

Used nvram default
nvram commit
mtd erase netgear
reboot to clear router, only way I could get internet speed back.
I then installed latest voxel.I changed nothing in the settings apart from enable telnet.
Then loaded version 5.41b. Changed nothing in addon.
No vpn, no aegis, no adguard. ips dns servers. So a clean Voxel image and a clean addon version 5.41b.
Internet speed dropped as reported.
Uninstalling 5.41b did not get internet speed back. Also loading netgear firmware and two versions of Voxel and having no Kamoj addon installed didnt.
Use ookla speed test , netgear app speed test for wireless and enigma 2 app on sat box for wired speed test.
So used commands at beginnig of post and internet speed returned.Installed version 5.3b30 .
All working ok and Internet speed ok .

Regards

Thank you for the report!
You are the first to report this problem that I have never had, despite testing for one month.

The error description is a bit too general to be useful for fault finding though.

Can you please provide more information about your configuration?
What settings do you change from Voxel vanilla installation?
DNS? Log file?
Ad-blocking? Log file?
OpenVPN / Wireguard? Log file?
Restart supervision? Log file?
Extended logging?
VPN bypassing?
Bandwidth Usage on?
Other installations?
Router Mode?
QoS on?
Transmission / Netgear Downloader?
Kwilt?
ReadyShare?
Aegis?
Entware?
Is the Netgear GUI responsive?
Is the Kamoj GUI responsive?
What is " Router Information " giving?
How do you measure the internet speed?

Can you run these commands (from Settings e.g.). I need to see if any process uses much cpu? :
top
ps

To off kamoj add-on functions but keeping the add-on:
Code:
nvram show | awk -F= '/^kamoj/ {print $1}' | xargs -n1 nvram unset
nvram commit
reboot
Then you can enable functions one by one until you find out what is causing your low speed.

Eagerly awaiting your reply, so we can solve this mystery soon!
Thank you again for all help with beta testing!

If you have a speed problem please provide more information since I can not repeat the issue myself.
Especially as I stated above it's needed to see if any process is "running wild".

Also can you state what Voxel version you are running.
And what router you are using!

For speed test I want you to run the speedtest.sh command that is included in the add-on .

Thank you

I've been following along and have not noticed any speed issues with my r9000 and the latest beta(s). Did not realize there was a speedtest.sh built in, so gave it a shot. My ISP plan is 200 download and 30 upload, here's the results:

Most suspicious is QoS interferents between the add-on and stock/voxel code.
The QoS in R7800 is so old and abandoned by Netgear so it should not give any benefit anyhow- switch it off!
If you have set speed limits for QoS they survive Firmware upgrade and downgrade (Netgear thing).
So, Switch Off QoS in Netgear GUI.

Some tips/pointers for you beta tester with an R7800 that experience slow internet with 5.4b:
(R9000 has another type of QoS and might not be effected)
  • Uninstall current kamoj add-on
  • Remove all USB-devices
  • Delete current configuration (nvram default && mtd erase netgear && nvram commit && reboot)
Note that after a fresh install, Netgear downloads a lot of stuff behind your back to the router,
so wait some 5-10 minutes at least after boot before doing some testing!
  • Don't restore an old configuration backup. Very important!
  • Run some online speedtests
  • Install kamoj add-on 5.4b2 or later
  • Disable Bandwidth Usage (Settings : Bandwidth Monitoring : disable)
  • reboot - Very important, failure to reboot may cause any type of issues. This is the way of Netgear old code.
  • Don't switch on OpenVPN or Wireguard
  • No Entware
  • No Aegis
  • Run speedtest.sh (Never measure speed through wireless connection)

    repeat until culprit found:
  • Start things / switch on options one by one
  • Run speedtest.sh
Ok, that's all for now.
Thank you all users and reporters out there!
I hope we can sort this out together - this is what beta testing is about!!!

Regards

I too had to delete my current configuration after trying 5.4b1, as my broadband had dropped to about 10-20% download and 2.5% upload original speeds.

All okay now :)

Good to get your report!
Have you taken any action to find out what is wrong? QoS? And how did you get things okay again?

Hi Kamoj -- I used your instructions just above to delete my configuration (in both R7800 Router and R7800 AP), and went with Voxel 80 on its own for now. I tried the vanilla Netgear fimware, but it made no difference to the speed losses, so went back to Voxel 80. QoS is always switched off anyway. I was beginning to think I had to ring my ISP, before I saw your post, as I thought that uninstalling the add-on removed all traces.

viz:-
  • Uninstall current kamoj add-on
  • Remove all USB-devices
  • Delete current configuration (nvram default && mtd erase netgear && nvram commit && reboot)
Note that after a fresh install, Netgear downloads a lot of stuff behind your back to the router,
so wait some 5-10 minutes at least after boot before doing some testing!
  • Don't restore an old configuration backup. Very important!

Is there a way of preserving one's IP allocation table without a full backup? That was what I most regret losing in the wipe, and it would be good if in future I could keep that if I need to do the same again.

Yes you can preserve (backup/restore) reservations.
Standby, I'll come back later here.

I just discovered that the backup file (*.cfg) done from either GUI or command prompt is corrupt!
In my case, normally it is the size of: 59048 bytes.
But now with Voxel 80SF and kamoj 5.4b2 it is 145592 bytes.
Something is very wrong. I don't understand where or why yet.
So check your config backups! What size are they?

Testing Qos on r7800 using Voxel ver 1.0.2.80sf and Kamoj 5.4b2.On my router clearing the cfg files with nvram default && mtd erase netgear && nvram commit && reboot was a must before installing Kamoj addon otherwise internet speed up/down was really bad. Also after turning off settings in the gui and applyinga reboot also a must. After doing above I found turning the Qos on and off reduced the upload speed by between 40 and 50% but the download remained constant. Also I got beter results when the Qos speed test was manually set. So to summarise just uninstalling Kamoj addon and installing update from 5.3b30 caused internet speed problems.Turning Qos off definitely increase internet speed .

Thank you. The QoS for R7800 is a big problem.
Seems like you must switch off QoS and reboot before installing add-on 5.4b ...

Thank you for all you hard work!

Indeed fixed the internet speed connection.

Also had issue using expressvpn i would always get authentication errors no matter what. I tried using the built in config creator, as well as pasting the config. Never connected. Latest version.
